SALEM, Va. - The Bridgewater College volleyball team fell to the host Roanoke Maroons 3-1 before beating the Shenandoah Hornets 3-1 in ODAC action on Saturday.
Game One: Bridgewater 1, Roanoke 3 (27-29, 21-25, 25-19, 27-25)
The Eagles and Maroons went the distance in set one playing into extra points. Despite Bridgewater outhitting Roanoke in the set, the Maroons took the first to go up one in the match.
After dropping the second set, the Eagles rolled to a set three victory causing nine Maroon attack errors in the process. Needing the win the fourth set to stay alive, Bridgewater fell just short in extra points.
Ashley Casey led the Eagles with 11 kills and 17 digs with only two attack errors on 40 attempts. Lisa O'Grady contributed 14 kills and Jyailah Friendly posted a match-high 27 digs. Grace Hayes notched a double-double with 41 assists and 12 digs.
Game Two: Bridgewater 3, Shenandoah 1 (25-14, 16-25, 25-20, 25-14)
The Eagles came out strong in the first set against Hornets holding them to their lowest kill total in any set with nine. Shenandoah came back to take the second frame, but the Eagles did not let the Hornets capitalize on their win and won the next two sets. Bridgewater hit an impressive .419 as a team in the fourth set compared to Shenandoah's .118.
Hayes proved her ability as an attacker with five kills in addition to her 34 assists. O'Grady and Lauren Nofsinger both had 12 kills while Nofsinger also had six total blocks. Friendly had 20 digs and Jessica Bissmeyer contributed 12.
Bridgewater returns to action on Thursday when they travel to crosstown rival Eastern Mennonite for a 7:00 p.m. match.
