BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College volleyball team earned an impressive 15-6 fifth set win to defeat the visiting Wasps of Emory & Henry on Wednesday.
With the win, the team moves to 7-4 and currently sits in fifth place ahead of next week's ODAC tournament.
After dropping the first set 25-23, the Eagles bounced back from a .156 hitting percentage to record a .231 percentage while causing the Wasps to hit just a .036. When Emory & Henry took a 2-1 advantage in the match after a third set win, Bridgewater flipped the switch and controlled the fourth set from start to finish. Sienna Sullivan ended the frame and pushed a fifth set on one of her career high 16 kills.
Sullivan and Hope Jennings put on a show in the fifth set with Sullivan serving the first eleven points and Jennings putting down five of her 16 total kills in the process. Sullivan closed out the game on an exclamation with two back-to-back kills to give the Eagles the dominant fifth set and match win.
Sullivan hit an impressive .542 on night, taking 24 swings with only three errors while adding five blocks. Jennings also posted 16 digs for a double-double and four aces. Grace Hayes ran a balance offense and had 45 assists, a season high for the sophomore, while adding 13 digs for the team's second double-double of the night. Ashley Casey and Jyailah Friendly both had 13 digs.
The team now waits for the rest of the ODAC to finish conference play before finding out their opponent for next week's tournament.
