SALEM, Va. - The 2021 Bridgewater College softball season came to close with two losses to Roanoke in the ODAC Quarterfinals on Friday.
Game One: Bridgewater 3, Roanoke 4
The Eagles started the day strong, posting three runs in the top of the second. After Roanoke walked Sarah Wimer, the junior advanced to second on a Brooklynn Fridley single. Senior Katrina Martin then reached on a fielder's choice leaving Martin and Wimer on base. Kaitlyn Tirona stepped up to the plate and hit a double down the left field line to score Wimer and Martin and make it 2-0. Tirona ran home on the next at-bat on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
Roanoke added a run in the bottom of the third and two more in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. Neither team was able to score in the remaining innings, sending the game to extra innings.
With a runner on second base, the Eagles could not score leaving the game in the Maroons hands. Roanoke was able to capitalize in ITB to take the game one win by a score of 4-3.
Avery Pinder, Samantha Hensley, Fridley and Tirona all had a hit for the Eagles. Brantley Swift pitched a complete game, allowing just one earned run.
Game Two: Bridgewater 4, Roanoke 8
Roanoke jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game two before Fridley got the Eagles on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a two RBI triple to right field to score pinch runner Cheyenne Barlow and Wimer to bring the Eagles within two. Martin stepped up and hit a two RBI homer to tie to game.
Roanoke answered with a two RBI homer of their own in the bottom of the fifth to go with two more runs in the sixth to earn the 8-4 victory and advance to the semifinals.
Pinder had a game-high three hits with Hensley and Wimer contributing two. Emma Killion pitched a complete game, allowing three earned runs.
Bridgewater ends the season with an 11-15 record, earning a spot in the ODAC Tournament for the second straight season.
