BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Virginia Wesleyan advanced to the semifinal round of the ODAC women's tennis tournament with a 5-1 victory Friday afternoon over Bridgewater College. Due to the high winds in the area Friday afternoon, the match was moved indoors to the Doug Will Tennis Center in the Town of Bridgewater.
The Marlins took the upper hand by winning two of the three doubles matches.
Audrey Bally and Alexa Brewster defeated Bridgewater's Whitney Kiser and Malena Hoover 8-2 at the No. 1 doubles slot for the first point of the day. The Marlins added the point at No. 2 doubles where Anna Rogers and Christine Zalameda held off the Eagles' Rachel Crawford and Ali Keister, 8-4.
The Eagles salvaged a pont at No. 3 doubles as Emily Daigneault and Ryan Roeber defeated Sophia Bibbo and Shannon Lewes, 8-3.
Virginia Wesleyan swept the first three singles flights to close out the match.
Brewster fought off Kiser in a tough first set, 7-5, and then took the second set 6-1 to win at No. 1 singles while Zalameda defeated Daigneault 6-4 , 6-1 to take the point at No. 2. Bally added the clinching point with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles over Crawford.
The Eagles finish the 2021 season with an 8-3 overall record.
