VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Bridgewater College softball team lost two close games by one run to No. 2 Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday in Virginia Beach.
Game One: Bridgewater 1, Virginia Wesleyan 0
Avery Pinder started the game with a single to third base on the first at-bat of the contest. The speedy junior stole third and crossed home plate for the Eagles on a Torie Shifflett RBI single to right field to put Bridgewater up 1-0.
The Marlins added a run in bottom of the second to tie the game at 1-1. With the score tied at the bottom of the seventh, the teams entered extra innings. Virginia Wesleyan was able to capitalize with a RBI single to score the winning run and end the game.
Pinder, Shifflett, Katrina Martin, Taylor Novak and Kathryn Thomas all had a hit for the Eagles. Emma Killion pitched a complete game, allowing nine hits and one earned run.
Game Two: Bridgewater 6, Virginia Wesleyan 7
Bridgewater fell behind 3-0 in the early stages of game two but tied it on a Sarah Wimer three RBI homer to right center field. The Eagles took the lead in the sixth on a Kaitlyn Tirona homer to make it 4-3.
The Marlins took the lead back in the bottom of the sixth, but the Eagles tied it back up shortly after in the seventh on a Samantha Hensley RBI single to send Martin home. With the game tied at 6-6 in the bottom of the seventh, Virginia Wesleyan won the game on a RBI single.
The Eagles battled the No. 2 team in country to the edge led by Hensley with two hits. Brantley Swift pitched a complete game, allowing 13 hits.
Bridgewater, now 9-3 on the year, returns to action this Saturday when they host Lynchburg on Senior Day.
