BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater men's soccer team defeated York this afternoon, 2-1, in a game that came down to the wire.
The game was an action filled contest from the first minute to the last. York came out firing just 30 seconds into the game, as the team was able to get a shot on goal and a corner in that time frame. But the Eagles were able to strike first at the 3:37 mark when rookie David Franco continued his hot streak scoring off a perfect crosser from Simon Brun.
Goalkeeper Charles Schweinefuss made an acrobatic save to keep it a 1-0 game just a couple of minutes later.
Bridgewater was able to extend its lead to 2-0 when in the 34th minute Franco scored his fifth goal of the season, and fifth in the last two games. BC took that lead into the half, being outshot 10-9, while corners favored the Spartans 4-3.
The second half was a back-and-forth affair, with York beginning to put Bridgewater on it heals halfway through the period. York made it a 2-1 on a goal from Tyler Howlett at the 79-minute mark. BC began to play more defensively, as York were creating more opportunities in the final 10 minutes.
The Spartans had several good chances in those final ten minutes, but good defensive play from the Eagles back line held York in check not allowing the tying goal. Schweinefuss made two more clutch saves in the final minute of the game, making 11 total saves.
Bridgewater has now won two straight, and holds a record of 2-3. The Eagles will look to keep the momentum going when they take on Regent at home on Tuesday, Sept. 21. Action is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
