Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College volleyball team fell to visiting Randolph-Macon on Wednesday night in a five-set thrilling heartbreaker.
Behind a packed Nininger Hall, Bridgewater held Randolph-Macon to only four kills in set one compared to the Eagles 13 for the 25-21 set victory.
The Yellow Jackets got out to an early 10-6 lead in set two until a four-point Grace Hayes service run gave BC the 11-10 advantage. It was all Eagles from there as kills from Jessica Bissmeyer and Ashley Casey pushed the BC lead to 19-14. Bridgewater held on to take the second set 25-20 and go up 2-0.
Randolph-Macon controlled majority of the third set, up 21-14 with only four points to go for the win. Bridgewater stormed back to make it 24-18 providing momentum heading into the fourth set.
The fouth set was a point-for-point affair. A Lisa O'Grady kill gave the Eagles a 23-22 edge and a Randolph-Macon error made it 24-22 with the Eagles needing one point to take the match. Two Eagle attack errors coupled with two Yellow Jacket kills gave the visitors the set to push a fifth and final set.
With the fans and an electric atmosphere in their favor, Bridgewater kept the beginning moments of the final set tight. Ultiamately, the Yellow Jackets offense produced their best hitting percentage of the evening at a .381 to outlast the Eagles.
Casey and O'Grady led Bridgewater with 14 kills each followed by Ann-Marie Johnson with eight. Grace Williams had a career-high 23 digs along with a new career-high of 11 digs for Madeline Walker. Casey added 11 digs for the double-double. Hayes also contributed a double-double, her third of the season, with 43 assists and 12 digs.
The Eagles, now 5-7 on the year and 2-2 in the ODAC, travel to Shenandoah on Friday. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.
