Eagles Sweep Day Two of Route 42 Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College volleyball team earned two impressive three set wins over EMU and Marymount to end the Route 42 undefeated.

Game One: Bridgewater 3, EMU 0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-22)

The crosstown rivals traded points to 9-9 until a Royal error and a Hope Jennings kill helped BC break away to go up two points and shift the momentum. The push was all Bridgewater needed to carry through the set and hold on for the 25-20 victory. Rookie Rachael Meyers had three kills for three consecutive Eagle points in the later frames of the set.

Bridgewater held EMU to a .083 hitting percentage in the second set with kills from Ashley Casey, Meyers and Lisa O'Grady to finish the set and give the home team a 2-0 edge.

The Eagles went on four three-point runs in the third set that proved to be crucial in securing the victory. Casey served up an ace to seal the 3-0 win.

Casey and Jennings each contributed eight kills with Casey adding 12 digs. Grace Hayes, Ann-Marie Johnson and Meyers all posted five kills. Hayes contributed 24 assists.

Game Two: Bridgewater 3, Marymount 0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-15)

Bridgewater jumped out to a quick start in set one to take a 7-4 lead behind kills from Johnson and Jennings. Marymount came within one point at 10-9 but were set back by errors to put the Eagles up 18-13. The Saints hung around and came within one again at 18-19 until a four-point Ashley Rutherford service run and Johnson kill ended the set.

The Eagles controlled the momentum through the second and third sets, coming away with an impressive win over the Atlantic East champs. Bridgewater held Marymount to a negative hitting percentage in the first and third sets. The Bridgewater defense, anchored by Jessica Bissmeyer, read the Saints attack effortlessly and made several impressive back row plays. Bissmeyer recorded a career-high 16 digs in the match.

Johnson continued her performance from a night ago, notching nine kills on ten swings for a .900 hitting percentage. The junior also contributed three blocks and four digs. Casey had eight kills, follwed by Jennings with six and O'Grady with five for a balanced attack. Hayes had 26 assists.

Bridgewater returns to action on Wednesday, September 8 when they host Christopher Newport in non-conference action. Match time is set for 6:00 p.m.
