Eagles, Martone Finish Second at Knights Invitational

LEXINGTON, Va. -- For the second straight tournament, Sophia Martone came back from a significant deficit to force a playoff as the Bridgewater College women's golf team and Martone each finished second at the conclusion of the Knights Invitational, hosted by Southern Virginia.

Martone was tied for ninth entering the final day of play before carding the lowest round of the tournament with a one-over 73. She dropped a stroke on the final hole of regulation to finish tied with Amani Narang of Sweet Briar. The two players went into a one-hole playoff replaying the 18th at the Lexington Country Club where Martone bogeyed again, but Narang was able to birdie the hole to win the hole and medalist honors. Martone said she hit almost all the fairways in round two and all the greens and thought it was a great round of golf overall.

"For the second time in three weeks, Sophia has forced a playoff with an elite player from the ODAC, which clearly states that she is also an elite player in the ODAC," said head coach John Rogers. "She has demonstrated some real grit and courage, especially for someone who is still just a sophomore."

Savannah Scott shot a 78 to finish tied for fifth place overall. She went one-under par on the middle holes of the day, six through 14. She credited her tee shots and greens in regulation for the score on the day. In the two tournaments Scott has played at the Lexington course, she has medaled and finished fifth.

Shaina Beach shot an 84 on the second day of play and finished tied for 24th place in the event. She felt she had smoe pressure on her coming off an usually high score in the first round. Beach started in the tough stretch of the course and was six-over through three holes, but was able to settle down and play the next seven holes at even-par. Beach said she felt good about her driving and her putting overall.

"Shaina is a tough competitor and has a way of coming through when you need her," said Rogers.

Madolin Neff was the final golfer to score for the Eagles as Emily Price did not compete in the final round of the event. Neff was averaging an 81 coming in, but shot an unusual 96 to close out the two-day event. She commented on her round saying she felt that everything was "off" on the day.

Individually, Kaitlyn Gaeth shot one of her best collegiate rounds with an 88 and Evelyn Hunter dropped 11 strokes from her first round to finish at 89 in the second round. She said her putting was a lot better than yesterday and felt her drives were solid.

The Eagles entered the day with a two-stroke advantage over SVU and Glenville State, but dropped six strokes behind quickly. The team battled back and took the lead for a second time, but eventually fell behind and finished second to SVU. This is the first time in five years the Eagles have not won the Southern Virginia event.

The Eagles hit the links again this weekend as they travel to the Cardinal Invitational, hosted by Catholic.
