Men's Golf Competes in Match Play with Southern Virginia

LEXINGTON, Va. -- On Thursday the Bridgewater College men's golf team played an exhibition match against Southern Virginia at Lexington Country Club (Lexington, VA). Playing an exhibition allowed the teams to play an unusual team format rarely seen in college golf -- the squads faced off in four-ball matches (two-man best-ball teams) for nine holes, and then singles matches on the back nine. There were 15 total points up for grab in the matches and Southern Virginia came out on top with a total of 8.5 points to Bridgewater's 6.5.

In what would have been the tie-breaking match, the Eagles' Ben Hutcheson defeated Alex Cox (2&1). Two more Eagles were able to play stroke-play as individuals: Connor Chapman shot 83 while Tayte Mills shot 91.

Highlights for the day included Max Kingora dropping a downhill 15-foot birdie putt on #9 to seal a victory in his four-ball match; Darien Smith hitting his pitch to one foot for birdie on the final hole to halve his match; Andrew Baugher being the only Eagle to earn two points -- he won holes #15 and #16, then sealed the deal on #17 by dropping a 12-foot par putt; Hayden Hawes and Logan Douthat were shut out early in the four-ball, but both came back to earn individual points.

"I think this might be the first exhibition match we have ever played at Bridgewater," said head coach John Rogers. "I think it was a fun change of pace for the guys and it was a beautiful day too. A lot of fun, and it was important to get some of our younger players into competition. I think we will do something like this again in the spring."

The Eagles have their final tournament of the fall season starting Monday at Guilford.
