Softball Scores 14 Runs on Opening Day

REDLANDS, Ca. – The Bridgewater College softball team opened the season with a split at the University of Redlands on Sunday to open the season.

Game One

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater 3, Redlands 4
  • Records: Bridgewater (0-1), Redlands (7-3)

How It Happened

  • The Bulldogs struck first in the bottom of the third on a RBI single. It didn't take the Eagles long to respond as Kaitlyn Tirona hit home run to left center with two outs on the board to tie the game
  • Annaliese Franklin started the fifth inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice fly from Kristen Dungee. With a runner on second, Torie Shifflett joined the home run party by firing one to left field to put Bridgewater up by two
  • Redlands added two on the bottom of the inning to tie the game. Both teams went three up three down in the sixth to set up an exciting seventh inning. Bridgewater was unable to add any runs in the top of the inning. The Bulldogs started with a single to center field and advanced the runner on a wild pitch. Redlands would win the game on a walk-off RBI fielder's choice

Match Notes

  • Shifflett, Tirona and Morgan Lucas all had two hits for BC while Sarah Wimer and Franklin added one each. Shifflett added two RBIs on her homer
  • Emma Killion pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and four runs while throwing 69 strikes

Game Two

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater 14, Redlands 1
  • Records: Bridgewater (1-1), Redlands (7-4)

How It Happened

  • After a scoreless five innings, Shifflett started the sixth with a single to left field. Peyton Gregory hit a single of her own and advanced to second on an error, sending Shifflett to third. Jazmyne Smith then advanced Gregory and sent Shifflett home on a single to left field to put the first run of the game on the board
  • Smith proceeded to steal second to tee up a Wimer single to send Gregory home. Smith ran home herself on a RBI single to center field by Lucas. The Bulldogs walked Whitlee Hughes before Samantha Martin hit a sacrifice fly to bring Wimer home give BC a 4-0 lead
  • The Bulldogs could not strike the Eagles out in the seventh as Bridgewater totaled 10 runs in the innings on just three hits. Redlands responded with a homer in the bottom of the inning to make the final score 14-1  

Match Notes

  • Seven Eagles totaled a hit in the contest, led by Lucas with two. Lucas and Martin also had two RBIs each while Smith stole two bases
  • Martin picked up the win in her first game as an Eagle, allowing four hits and earning five strikeouts. Savannah Painter pitched the final inning, allow one hit and one run

  • The Eagles return to action tomorrow when they face Occidental College on day two of their California trip. Action is set for 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm EST
