RALEIGH, N.C. – The Bridgewater College volleyball team traveled to Raleigh, North Carolina for a nonconference tri-match featuring Brevard and Meredith on Saturday.
The Eagles picked up a pair of victories, defeating Brevard, 3-1, before capping the day with a 3-0 sweep against Meredith.
Match One:
Final Score: Bridgewater 3, Brevard 1 (25-27, 25-15, 25-20)
Records: Bridgewater 4-3; Brevard 2-3
How it Happened:
- The two sides exchanged the first seven points of the match before the Eagles rallied for five of the next six points to take an 8-5 advantage in the opening set. The Tornados responded by doing the same and tying the set at 11-11 and eventually went ahead 13-12.
- Brevard continued to hold an edge through the set before forcing a Bridgewater timeout up 19-16. The timeout was successful as the Eagles scored four of the next five points to draw the set even at 20-20. Neither side could still find a distinct advantage before Brevard won the last two points of the set to take it, 27-25.
- The second set was a different story as Bridgewater dominated early on jumping out to a 9-4 lead to force a Tornado timeout. A Rachael Meyers kill followed by an attack error from Brevard pushed the set score to 11-4. Four of the next five points went to Bridgewater to go ahead 15-5. The two sides alternated points before another lengthy run of points pushed the game score to 20-7. Despite earning eight of the next 12 points, the Eagles pulled away for a 25-15 set win to tie the match.
- Once again, the Eagles opened the set fast with 13 of the first 16 points to go up 13-3. The Tornados responded by shortening the lead down to 16-10, and then gained five of the next eight points to force a Bridgewater timeout. Coming out of the stoppage, the Eagles went on a four-point run and took advantage of a pair of attack errors from the Tornados before eventually taking the set 25-20.
- Kylie Robinson capped a run of four of the first five set points in the fourth game for the Eagles before Brevard took each of the next three to tie the set early on. Bridgewater worked out a 10-7 lead, but Brevard took back the lead, 13-12, as the sides alternated scores. BC worked the score back out to 19-16 to force a Brevard timeout and then won six of the final nine points to walk away with a 25-19 set win and a 3-1 match victory.
Match Stats:
- Leading the way offensively was Meyers who finished with 11 kills on a .429 hitting percentage to go along with a pair of block assists. Ashley Casey downed nine kills, while Lisa O'Grady and Robinson each recorded eight kills in the win.
- Grace Hayes finished with 24 assists, while Ashley Rutherford registered 11 of her own.
- Sophia Stites led the team with 19 digs, while Casey finished with seven and Faith DePew and Rutherford each had six digs.
- Bridgewater hit .256 as a team in the match, including striking at a .345 clip in the second set.
Match two
Final Score: Bridgewater 3, Meredith 0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-21)

How it Happened:
- BC opened the match with the first five points, including a pair of O'Grady kills, to force Meredith into an early timeout. The Avenging Angels fought back for a few points but the Eagles went ahead 12-5. Meredith strung together four straight points to cut the lead down to 12-9 to cause a timeout from the Bridgewater bench. The sides exchanged runs as the Avenging Angels tied the set at 16-16. Both teams alternated scoring opportunities as the Eagles went up 21-18 to cause the second timeout of the set by MC. Again, the sides split the next several points before Hayes downed a kill to take the set, 25-22.
- The second set started out much of the same as the Eagles jumped ahead 6-2 capped by an Ann-Marie Johnson kill. The Avenging Angels battled back to tie the set at 9-9 as the two sides alternated scores. The Eagles ran the score to 16-11 to force a timeout. Meredith was able to cut the score down to a two-point deficit, but the Eagles scored four of the next five points to take a 21-16 lead. BC continued to control the set and eventually won 25-19.
- No team found a clear advantage in play early on in the final set as neither team could find more than a three-point lead until the Eagles jumped ahead 12-7 off an O'Grady kill. Meredith responded by tallying four of the next five points and cutting down the lead to 13-11. The Eagles went on a scoring run to take a 19-13 lead to force a timeout from the home team. Six of the next seven points went to the Avenging Angles as the Eagles called a timeout to preserve the lead. Bridgewater took five of the last seven capped by a pair of O'Grady kills to take the set and the match.
Match Stats:
- O'Grady led the team with 10 kills on a terrific .364 hitting percentage, while Robinson finished with eight kills of her own. Casey and Meyers each finished the second match of the day with six kills.
- Hayes finished with 30 assists to go with three kills on four hits. She also downed a solo block and assisted on a block.
- Stites registered 13 digs, while Grace Williams recorded nine digs of her own.
