Volleyball Sweeps Maroons

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Bridgewater College volleyball team picked up a 3-0 win against Roanoke in ODAC action in Nininger Hall on Thursday night.

THE BASICS

Final score: Bridgewater 3, Roanoke 0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-21)
Records: Bridgewater 6-4, 2-0 ODAC; Roanoke 5-5, 0-2 ODAC

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bridgewater jumped out to a quick 6-3 lead after back-to-back Ashley Rutherford service aces, but the Maroons battled back with five straight points to take the lead. The Eagles bounced back with a run of four-straight points of their own to go back ahead 10-8. The back and forth set continued as Roanoke went back in front, 11-10, on a pair of consecutive blocks. Following a service error, the Eagles picked up 10 of the next 11 points to take a 20-12 lead on their way to a 25-17 victory in the opening frame.
  • Roanoke took an early lead to start the second set before the Eagles rallied for four straight to go up 11-10 midway through the game. Each team traded points as BC held on to a one point edge. Kills from Lisa O'Grady and Sarah Kerns pushed the home side up 21-19 and then took four of the final five points in the set to go up two sets.
  • Both sides alternated lengthy runs to force timeouts from the opponent as the third frame sat at 14-13 in favor of the Maroons. The Eagles put down three-straight kills to take a 16-14 lead as they never looked back and led the rest of the way. BC took the third set, 25-21, and the match, 3-0.
MATCH STATS
  • Faith DePew led the team with 12 kills to go along with seven digs and a pair of block assists. O'Grady finished with eight kills and added in a block assist and a dig of her own.
  • Kerns and Kylie Robinson each finished with six kills as Robinson tallied 15 digs and Kerns recorded two blocks. Lauren Nofsinger pitched in four kills on nine swings and downed three total blocks in the win.
  • Grace Hayes finished with 20 assists, while Rutherford also pitched in 12 helpers and eight digs of her own.
  • Sophia Stites led the team with 16 digs and added in four assists, as well. 

UP NEXT
Bridgewater is right back in action on Saturday, September 17, as it hosts a quad match featuring Greensboro, Shenandoah and Southern Virginia. The matches are scheduled to begin at 10 am with the Eagles matching up against Southern Virginia at 12 pm and Greensboro at 4 pm.
