Eagles Take Down Seahawks

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- A day after dropping a 3-0 contest on the road, the Bridgewater College volleyball team got back on the winning track with a 3-0 win against St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday morning.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles jumped out to an early lead in the first set taking eight of the first 10 points capped by a kill from Ashley Casey. The lead went up to 14-5 after taking advantage of consecutive attacking errors from the Seahawks. BC's lead in the set grew to as many as eight points on the way to a 25-19 set win.
  • St. Mary's took its first lead in the match in the first moments of the second game, but three-straight attack errors, including a block from Gabby Atwell and Sarah Kerns, pushed the Eagles in front for the rest of the set. BC went on to score eight of the next 10 points and each of the last seven to win the game 25-10 and go up 2-0 in the match.
  •  The two sides went back and forth to start the last set of the game as the set score was tied at six apiece in the early moments. The Seahawks jumped ahead 8-6 and remainined in the lead until a block from Kerns and Rachael Meyers notched the score at 11-11. After splitting the next several points, a Casey kill pushed the Eagles ahead for good at 15-14 as the Crimson and Gold went on to a 25-17 win to win the match 3-0.
MATCH STATS
  • Casey led the way with nine kills on a .273 hitting percentage followed by Faith DePew with eight kills and Lisa O'Grady with seven kills on a .467 hitting clip. 
  • Grace Hayes finished with 21 assists and 10 digs as well as a kill, while Ashley Rutherford picked up 12 assists, four digs and a kill of her own.
  • Sophia Stites paced the Eagles with 13 digs and also picked up a par of assists. Emma Anderson recorded seven digs and a service ace in the win. 
  • On the nets, Kerns finished with six block assists to go along with six kills, while Meyers was next with five total blocks, including one solo, and five kills.
UP NEXT
Bridgewater is back in action on the road on Sept. 28, as it travels to ODAC-foe Shenandoah for a 7 pm match.
