Eagles Upended by No. 10/11 Randolph-Macon

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Bridgewater College football team fell to No. 10/11 Randolph-Macon, 38-3, at the Jopson Athletic Complex in ODAC action on Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles see their four-game winning streak come to an end and move to 4-2 on the year with a 2-1 mark in ODAC games. The nationally-ranked Yellow Jackets stay perfect at 6-0 overall behind a 3-0 league record.

Bridgewater kicked off to start the game and forced RMC to punt on the game's opening drive. The Eagles quickly moved the ball into RMC territory before a turnover gave the Yellow Jackets the ball near midfield. Drew Campanale found JoJo Marinella on the very next play for a 56-yard touchdown as RMC went ahead 7-0 with 4:15 left in the first quarter. 

Randolph-Macon took advantage of another turnover and moved the ball down the field for a 30-yard field goal by Kyle Ihle to take a 10-0 lead with 2:17 left in the opening quarter.

The lead extended to 17-0 after a 20-yard touchdown pass from Campanale as he found Marinella again for the score. 

The Eagles went three-and-out on the next drive, but a muffed punt by the RMC special teams unit gave BC the ball back with good field position. Jack Hendren nailed a 37-yard field goal to get Bridgewater on the board to make it 17-3 with 8:41 left in the half. 

Randolph-Macon used a 13-play, 82-yard drive that took away eight minutes to get another touchdown before the end of the half this time from Kwesi Clarke who ended the drive with a one-yard touchdown. After a good PAT, the score was set at 24-3 at the half.

RMC added another Clarke touchdown in the third quarter to take a 31-3 lead and kicked a field goal in the fourth quarter to get to the final score line of 38-3.

Jaicere Bateman got the start under center for the Eagles and went 7-for-12 for 62 yards and a pair of interceptions, while Malcolm Anderson was 4-for-8 on the afternoon.

Kennedy Fauntleroy was held to just 38 yards on 17 attempts to lead the running game

Montez Green had a pair of catches going for 26 yards, while Derrick Jenkins also had two grabs for 14 yards. Cedric Drumgoole, Evan Welsh, Freddie Watkins, Jamel Johnson, Brendan Robinson and Ian Browne also had catches.

Defensively, Aaron Nice led the Eagles with 10 tackles (five solo) with 1.0 TFL. Aaron Moore had nine stops of his own (five solo), while TJ Lowery registered five tackles.Jalen Cunningham recorded the loan sack for the Eagles costing the Yellow Jackets seven yards. Shawn Harris and Demarco Fleming combined for another tackle for loss, as well. 

Randolph-Macon registered 22 first downs compared to nine from the Eagles. The Yellow Jackets outgained BC 416-103.

Despite the loss, the Eagles held one of the highest-scoring teams in the country to its lowest point total of the season as the Yellow Jackets entered the contest averaging 58.0 points per game. The Bridgewater defense also held RMC to just two third-down conversions in 10 opportunities (20%). RMC entered the contest as the nation's leader in third-down conversions at over 60%.

The Eagles are back in action next Saturday, October 21, as they head to Averett for a 2 pm kickoff in Danville, Virginia.
