Eagles Extend Win Streak to Eight Against Guilford

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College volleyball team took down Guilford 3-2 Saturday afternoon in the last regular season home game of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Guilford had the advantage early getting out to a 4-1 lead until Faith DePew fired a kill to start a run of five to put Bridgewater ahead 6-4. The two teams became deadlocked at eight points following a Reagan Stoop kill, but the Eagles followed it up with a 5-0 run to widen the margin, 13-8. BC got to its largest lead of eight following a Quakers' attack error, 18-10. Near the end, the two teams traded points with one another with Bridgewater pulling away following a Gabby Atwell kill, 25-20.
  • Rachael Meyers helped the Eagles going on the attack early to put the Eagles ahead early 4-0. Guilford managed to keep the score within five following a kill from Paige McDonald, with BC leading 10-5. Midway through the set, Stoop fired a kill, assisted by Ashley Rutherford, to start a run of seven and lead 20-9. The Quakers scored once more, with Bridgewater powering its way to a 25-10 set victory.
  • The Eagles led 6-4 through the first 10 points of the match with Faith Shields assisting on a Gabby Atwell kill. The two teams knotted the score up at 10 with BC's Kylie Robinson on the attack. Late in the set, Stoop fired a kill to tie the score for the 12th time of the set at 20-20. Both teams continued to fight pushing the scoring total past the 25 point mark, Guilford pulled away to take the set 29-27.
  • Bridgewater opened the fourth set leading 7-3 with the team recording multiple successful attacks on the run. Stoop put the Eagles up four with a service ace, but Guilford responded going on a 7-0 run to go ahead 14-11. BC maintained within reach throughout the set's end not being down more than four. The Quakers evened the match total at two and forced a game deciding set five.
  • Stoop and Atwell shared a huge block to put Bridgewater up 5-4 early in the last set. Guilford took the lead scoring two, but the Eagles went on a run of three to go up 8-6. The score remained tight to end the match, but BC picked up back to back kills from Stoop and DePew to take the set 15-11 and win the match 3-2.
MATCH STATS
  • Stoop etches her name in the Bridgewater record book for single match kills, sitting in first place, having picked up 31 today. The freshman also surpassed 300 kills on the year.
  • Meyers picked up 13 kills swinging a .385 hitting percentage and DePew and Atwell tied with nine kills apiece.
  • Rutherford recorded 36 assists earning a new season high this year while also recording 10 digs in the game.
  • Madeline Walker led the way defensively, registering 17 digs, while teammates Stoop and Sophia Stites followed with 16 and 14, respectively. Stites picked up her 300th dig of the season.
  • The team registered 13 blocks while the Quakers had five. Stoop ended with eight blocks and Meyers recorded six.
