Football Prepped for Regular Season Finale

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Following a loss last week at Washington and Lee, the Bridgewater College football team looks to end the regular season on a high note on Senior Day at the Jopson Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Bridgewater vs. Guilford
When: Saturday, November 11, 2023
Where: Bridgewater, Va.
Stadium: Jopson Athletic Complex
Kickoff: 2:00 pm
Gameday Forecast: Temps in the 60s
Series Record: Guilford leads 26-22 (Last Meeting: BC won 64-22)

SCOUTING THE QUAKERS: Guilford enters today's contest at 2-7 on the season and in the midst of a seven-game losing streak after earning a pair of wins to start the season. The Quakers have victories over Greensboro and Methodist. Most recently, the Quakers fell 34-13 against Averett in their last time out. Guilford actually returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown as Tristian Bailey went 89 yards to paydirt to give Guilford a 6-0 lead to start the game. Averett scored nearly seven minutes later and then returned an interception for a touchdown to quickly assume a 14-6 lead. The Quakers capitalized on a 29-yard touchdown from Bailey Baker to Parker DeHart to make it a one-point game, but 20 unanswered points from the Cougars put the game away.
GUILFORD HEAD COACH:  Brad Davis took over the Guilford program in December 2020 after serving with an interim head coach tag for the previous two months. He owns a 5-27 record with the Quakers, but guided the team to breaking its 18-game ODAC losing streak last season. Before taking the reigns of the program, Davis served as an assistant coach for the Quakers for 12 years after playing at GC for four years before that. He was assistant head coach in 2019. During his playing days, Davis started 33 of his 34 career games and was named second team All-ODAC as a senior in 2007. He was part of an offensive line that saw the Quakers rank among Division III leaders and actually led DIII in passing yards twice.

LAST MEETING: The Eagles racked up over 60 points in last season's meeting as BC walked away with a 64-22 win in Greensboro to end the regular season. In the high-scoring affair, the Eagles scored the first 29 points of the game before the Quakers got on the board with three minutes left in the first half, but was matched by a 90-yard kick return for a touchdown on the ensuing kickoff. Bridgewater routed the Quakers in the second half, as well, as it scored four touchdowns and held Guilford off the board until the final minutes of the game. Aaron Nice put himself all over the team's record book in the game after recording 6.5 sacks in the win.

ALL-TIME SERIES: Guilford holds a slight edge in the all-time season series at 26-22 in a rivalry that dates back to the mid 1930s. Despite trailing in the all-time series, the Eagles have earned wins in each of the last four meetings and five of the last six games. The Eagles won 12 of 13 games between 1999 and 2011 before the Quakers picked up victories in four straight between 2012 and 2015 to get the series nearly even. Bridgewater has scored at least 40 points in each of the last three meetings.

WHAT HAPPENED LAST: Bridgewater was downed by Washington and Lee, 31-21, on the road last week at Wilson Field. The Generals opened the game with a nine-play, 73-yard drive to go up 7-0 early and added two more scores to hold a 17-0 lead after the first 15 minutes. The Eagles found the end zone with 11 minutes left in the half on a Kennedy Fauntleroy touchdown, which was his 15th of the season. WLU added two more scores to go up 31-7, but Bridgewater made it close by causing several turnovers in the second half and scoring a pair of touchdowns, but ultimately fell short. The game featured a pair of 4-1 teams in the ODAC in a battle to take hold of second place in the ODAC in hopes of hosting a bowl game next weekend.

SEEING GREEN: Sophomore wide receiver Montez Green led the game with seven receptions and 52 yards in last week's contest, including a touchdown grab. Green has moved his way into a starting role for the Bridgewater offense in 2023 and ranks second on the team with 245 receiving yards. He leads the Eagles with 21 grabs in seven games and is tied for the team lead in receiving touchdowns as the regular season enters its final week.

AARONS: Sophomore linebacker Aaron Nice and senior defensive back Aaron Moore paced the defense against Washington and Lee with 16 and 15 tackles, respectively, in the loss. Nice's new career-high mark put him in a tie for the ODAC lead with 98 total tackles on the season, including 51 solo stops, which is also tied for most in the league. Moore's total from the contest puts him at 60 and in second on the roster for the statistic.
PLAYING TAKEAWAY: The Bridgewater defense once again caused several turnovers in last week's game as the Eagles grabbed three fumbles and turned them into points. That makes three straight weeks the unit has forced multiple turnovers after having just four through the nonconference portion of the schedule. The Eagles have now caused 14 turnovers in the last three weeks after getting six against Averett and five against Ferrum.
