Women's Basketball Dominates Rutgers-Newark

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College women's basketball team stormed past Rutgers-Newark 80-28 on Saturday night for its largest win in three seasons.
 
The Basics

How it Happened 
  • The Eagles opened the game after forcing a miss on the defensive end and Abby Freeman found Jaden Alsberry dow n low to get the scoring going. After and Alsberry block the senior got an offensive board on the other end and put it back up to keep the momentum rolling. The Eagles stormed in front, not allowing a Scarlet Raider field goal for the opening 7:50. Reagan Maynard led all scorers with eight points to fuel the 19-0 run to start the game. After going 0-of-12 from the field, Rutgers-Newark got on the board but headed to the end of the first trailing 19-2.
  • Alexis Edmonds opened the second quarter's scoring off of an assist from Jaiden Polston. A Jay Garcia three-point play extended the lead before the Scarlet Raiders got on the board with just their second make of the night. After the two-point score BC opened the game up further with a 10-2 run behind four points from Abby Freeman and three steals. The two sides traded scores down the stretch sending it to the break at 42-14.
  • Freeman opened the second half with a layup from the assist by Alsberry before My'la Green kept the scoring going with a layup of her own. Rutgers-Newark got on the board, but Alsberry responded quickly on the next trip down the floor. BC closed the third quarter on a 16-3 scoring spree as eight different Eagles got in on the action with none scoring multiple field goals during the final eight minutes of the quarter.
  • The Scarlet Raiders opened the fourth with a make from Ebony Odom Barnes and opened the fourth on a 7-4 run before a pair 0of makes at the charity stripe by Aylin Humphreys and a hook shot from Jay Garcia got the offense going again. The Rutgers-Newark offense started the fourth hot, but a 10-0 run for BC down the stretch sealed the deal for a 80-28 win.
 
Match Notes 
  • The win was Bridgewater's first 50+ point win since 2021 which was also by a final score of 80-28. BC also opened the season with their second consecutive 50+ rebound and 15+ steal game of the season.
  • Freeman was the only Eagle in double figures, but 13 different Bridgewater players scored during the win.
  • Bridgewater won the rebounding battle 74-28. The Eagles grabbed 39 offensive rebounds alone and every Eagle tallied at least one board in the win. The tally of offensive boards is the highest in program history since the team grabbed 42 on the offensive glass against Mary Baldwin in 2013.
  • The only stat Bridgewater did not dominate was shooting from beyond the arc. Rutgers-Newark was 1/9 from long range while Grace Burke had the only three-pointer for BC in 30 attempts.
