Eagles Dominate Panthers in ODAC Opener

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team picked up an 18-5 win against Ferrum at the Jopson Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon in the team's conference opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles got on the board first with a man-up score from Trevor McClelland less than two minutes into the contest after getting a pass from Chris Martel. Bridgewater doubled its lead out of the stick of Colby Smith just two minutes later as the Eagles maintained a 2-0 lead after the opening 15 minutes.
  • BC started to pull away in the second outscoring Ferrum 7-1 in the quarter. McClelland notched his second goal with an assist from Hayden Gourley at the 13:07 mark followed by Gabriel Alexander scoring just seven seconds later after winning a face off. Martel found the back of the net for the first time in the game with 10 minutes left in the half before Martel added an assist on a Connor McLean goal with 9:24 showing on the clock. The Panthers finally got on the scoreboard at 8:46 as Tommy Jackson registered an unassisted score to make the game 6-1. 
  • Bryce Burgit put the Eagles up 7-1 before McClelland completed a first-half hat trick with four minutes left in the stanza. Eddie Ross IV got his second goal of the year right before halftime to give BC a 9-1 lead going into the break.
  • Riley Stewart started off the third quarter with a goal after a pass from McLean to get the Eagles to 10 goals on the afternoon. Martel tallied back-to-back goals with assists from Luke Wendler and McLean followed by a goal from Drew Huber as BC jumped ahead 13-1 with nine minutes to go in the quarter. Clay Lawrence registered his first collegiate goal with a minute to go in the third period as the Eagles led 14-1 after 45 minutes.
  • McClelland scored again to start off the fourth quarter with an assist to Kevin Tiffey, who got three helpers in the final quarter. Burgit grabbed his second goal of the game to get the Eagles ahead 16-1 before the Panthers scored four straight to make the score 16-5. Gysbertus Metten scored his first of the year at the 4:25 mark before Oliver Nowell-Shortt netted his first collegiate goal with just under four minutes left to get to the final score of 18-5.
GAME STATS
  • McClelland led the game with four goals, while Martel had a six-point day on three goals and three assists. McLean added a goal and three assists for a four-point effort as well.
  • Tiffey tallied three assists, while Gourley pitched in two assists. Burgit scored twice as Alexander, Smith, Stewart, Metten, Ross, Nowell-Shortt, Huber and Lawrence all scored. Wendler added an assist in the win, as well.
  • Alexander went 13-of-17 in faceoffs with a game-high 12 ground balls, while Samuel Sharps won six of his nine draws.
  • McLean picked up 12 ground balls, while Hunter Russell who made his first collegiate start snagged three and caused a pair of turnovers. Liam Santilli and Jacob Mead each caused two turnovers, while Brennan McKeown had one CT and a pair of ground balls.
  • Tyler Carney played the first three quarters and made four saves in the win, while Ian Cook and Zach Guthrie-Pimpinella both got time between the pipes in the fourth quarter. Brody Johnson made 19 saves for the Panthers in all 60 minutes.
UP NEXT
Bridgewater is idle for a week before returning to action on the road at St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday, March 25, at 4 pm.
