Men's Golf Completes Successful Week

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. -- The Bridgewater College men's golf team completed the third round of the Jekyll Island Collegiate shooting a team score of 310 on the Oleander Course on Sunday.

The squad played the new course without a practice round with none of the five golfers having even seen it before, but the team finished with a better-than-average score to close out a successful week.

"In such a strong field, it was not all clear if we would earn an invitation back next year," said head coach John Rogers. "Being the 29th seeded team here at Jekyll, we needed to beat a couple teams ranked at least 50 spots higher than us nationally, which made it a steep hill to face. The guys really came through -- yesterday's round was a phenomenal performance, but today's round was good enough to seal the deal and was respectable since we went to the Oleander course playing blind."

Max Bondurant wrapped up an excellent tournament with a 73 on the final day. Bondurant carded four birdies, including two chip-ins to finish at +1 in the third round.

"This was my first time completing a three-round tournament with a score in single digits in relation to par," said Bondurant. "I'm learning to use my advantage in length - instead of playing passive, I decided to get aggressive this week and try to pick up strokes rather than defensively trying just to avoid losing strokes."

Bonduant finished at +6 for the tournament and ranked inside the top third of the leaderboard that featured nearly 150 golfers.

Hayden Hawes holed out from a bunker on No. 17 for birdie to help hold together a solid round. He said he felt he hasn't been hitting the ball great so far this spring, but grinded to get everything he could this weekend and was the only player on the team to play without a hole higher than a bogey on the day. Hawes finished with a five-over par 77.

Brandon Washburn continued to drive the ball well as he closed out the tournament with a 79. He dropped four strokes late, but still concluded a solid showing for a first experience on a large stage like this event.

Logan Douthat finished what could have been one of the strangest weeks in the field as he carded his second round of 81 sandwiched around a Saturday score of 69. He played steadily for most of Sunday's final round, but made a couple bad choices from the tee not knowing the course, which led to a triple-bogey on No. 15. Douthat was second on the team with a +15 for the weekend.

Jacob Sears recorded an 82 in the final round of the event. He had three birdies and was +3 through 11 holes, but dropped seven strokes through the final seven holes.

Competing as an individual, Jack Thome wrapped up a consistent weekend and added a 78 on Sunday. He said he's feeling more comfortable with swing changes since he started last semester and played his back nine with eight pars. Thome finished 15th out of 34 golfers in the separate individual event.

The Eagles are back on the course at the end of the month for the Camp Lejeune Collegiate in North Carolina on March 31 through April 2.
