Eagles Increase Lead at Camp Lejeune

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. -- The Bridgewater College women's golf team completed the second round of the inaugural women's Camp Lejeune Collegiate on Saturday as the Eagles increased their lead to 17 strokes after carding a 331, which was the lowest round of the day.

The Eagles added 11 strokes to their score from the first day of the event, but high winds make play difficult throughout the course of the afternoon.

Sophia Martone played steady through the first 15 holes of the second round but dropped four strokes through the final three to finish with an 81. Martone entered the day in first place but dropped to second after Caroline Tamburstuen carded a tournament-low 72 to take an eight-stroke lead over Martone.

Madolin Neff has been working through a few new swing mechanics but saw better results off the tee in the second round. She registered the fourth lowest round of the day and ended the day with an 82. Neff followed along the team trend of playing well on the front nine, but dropped a few strokes in closing. Neff is now tied for fifth in the tournament.

Shaina Beach and Savannah Scott each carded 84s to round out the scoring rounds for the Eagles. Each golfer made the turn at 41 and also gave up several strokes on the final three holes. Beach hit her tee shots well and even birdied 13 and 15. Scott was pleased with her iron play but said she struggled on the greens. Both are tied for eighth.

Kaitlyn Gaeth followed her career best round of 83 with a second-lowest career round of 85. Gaeth continues to mature as a tournament player and actually leads the team in birdies over the last two tournaments in which she's been in the lineup. Gaeth sits in 12th place for the tournament.

"We really handled the wind well early in the round and just got a little sloppy at the end, which is easy to do when you've been grinding for hours," said head coach John Rogers. "Now we need to close the deal and hopefully get everyone in the top 10 individually."

The third and final round starts off on Sunday morning at 8:30 am.
