UPPERCO, Md. -- The Bridgewater College men's golf 'B' Team participated in the Stevenson Spring Invitational hosted at Piney Branch Golf Course in Upperco, Maryland. Led by a sixth-place finish by sophomore
Cole Miller, who shot a team best 75 (+4), the Eagles finished fifth in a 10-team event posting a 326 team score.
"It was great for our younger players to compete," said assistant coach Mike Clark who traveled with the team. "That is a difficult course to play in a one-day event. Events like this provide dividends down the road for the program.
Miller bogeyed the first two holes but started to trust his swing on his way to the team-best score of 75. He has gone through significant swing changes since he arrived at BC in the fall. Despite the first two holes, he played the remaining 16 holes at just +2. Miller stuck to the plan of leaving approaches below the treacherous greens and used that plan to shoot his best collegiate round by five strokes.
Darien Smith posted his first sub-80 score on the road contributing a 79 on the tough Piney Branch track. Similar to Miller, Smith was +5 through four holes, but drained a nice putt on his fifth hole and played at just +3 the rest of the way. He finished tied for 11th place.Â
Andy Pack closed out his two-sport career at Bridgewater with an 84 to provide the third score for the Eagles. The former BC basketball player developed quickly and actually led a couple of the recent team qualifiers.Â
"My last collegiate event was awesome," said Pack. "I had a great time and played some pretty solid golf. I made a couple birdies early in the round, which gave me a little momentum."
Max Kingora got off to a good start, but his driver got wild in the middle holes. He was able to scramble well and showed why he was the most improved player on the team from last season to now. Kingora finished with an 88
Tayte Mills finished with a 94 playing in just his third collegiate event, but
Blake Sibert played the event as an individual and finished with an 89.
"It's always good to get guys some playing time, and it was pretty cool that our guys can go up to Stevenson and finish middle of the pack against starting lineups from other schools," said head coach
John Rogers. "It shows our depth, but it also demonstrates the dedication of our players from the top of the roster to the bottom. These are all great guys, and great competitors."
The Eagles are back in action next weekend at the 2023 ODAC Championship. The three-day event is set to begin on Sunday, April 23, at the Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.
