JACKSONVILLE, N.C. -- The Bridgewater College women's golf team earned victory at the inaugural women's Camp Lejeune Collegiate as the program extended its streak of multiple event victories to nine seasons after carding a 317 round on Sunday morning.
The Eagles finished with a three-round score of 968 to finish 46 strokes ahead of second place Averett. Pfeiffer took third to round out the top half of competition. The 317 the Eagles registered is the third lowest team score of the season as the squad earns its second win of the year following victory at the Cardinal Classic in the fall.
"We had a bit of a sluggish start to the season, so hopefully this will give us some momentum," said head coach
John Rogers. "The ladies did a great job playing at a new venue, and they all contributed to another win. Especially have to tip my hat to
Kaitlyn Gaeth because she produced her three best collegiate scores in three-consecutive days and she has very little experience with tournament pressure like this."
Gaeth completed the event with a career-best round of 79. Through the first 10 holes of the third day, she was just +2 and leading the field for the morning. Assistant coach Mike Clark commented that he was impressed that she held her composure following a double bogey on the 15th hole to par the last three holes of her round to break 80 for the first time. Gaeth finished tied for sixth, which is her first top 10 finish of her career.
"I think my mental game helped me a lot," said Gaeth. "Just knowing I could score after the first day and focusing on course management, as well as the event atmosphere was overall awesome and helped me stay loose and have fun."
Sophia Martone scored the lowest round of the day for the Eagles with a 77. She played steadily throughout the morning and was +3 on both sides of the course. She was at one point able to pull within four strokes of the event medalist, Caroline Tamburstuen of Averett, and held on to second place for another top five finish in her young career.Â
After a slow start,
Savannah Scott was able to rally and finish with a 79. She was +5 through six holes and parred eight-straight to secure her third straight round in the 70s for the tournament. Scott noted that her putting was better today than in the prior round. Scott moved up four spots on the final day for a fourth-place finish.
Madolin Neff played all 18 holes with just one hole higher than a bogey and registered an 82. She said that no parts of her game were perfect, but all parts were good enough to continue to compete and she ended in a tie for sixth place on the leaderboard.
Shaina Beach said her ball striking was not the best during the final round at Camp Lejeune. She finished with an 88 and tied for 12th in the tournament. In addition, the unique atmosphere at the Camp Lejeune Collegiate includes players pairing with local amateurs in an extra competition, which saw Beach's team finish in third. Neff and her amateurs won the side competition.
While the BC men's golf team has been a consistent participant at the Camp Lejeune Collegiate over the last 15 years, this was the first time a women's event, which makes this weekend's victory a historic one for the Eagles.Â
Bridgewater is back in action in two-weeks time for the Spartan Invitational, hosted by York College, on April 16-17.Â
