Eagles Downed by No. 11 Captains

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College field hockey team lost a 4-0 contest with No. 11 Christopher Newport at the Jopson Athletic Complex on Wednesday evening.

THE BASICS

Final Score: No. 11 Christopher Newport 4, Bridgewater 0
Records: Bridgewater 2-2; Christopher Newport 4-0

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CNU maintained possession for a majority of the first 15 minutes as it recorded the only shots. Both sides were held scoreless through most of the quarter before Abby Asuncion rifled a shot into the top right corner of the cage from distance going bar-down to break the scoreless draw and gave the Captains a 1-0 lead after the opening period.
  • The second quarter once again saw the No. 11 team in the country maintain a majority of the possession before the visitors earned a penalty stroke. Katie Abendschoen's attempt was true to double the lead to 2-0, which held until the halftime break.
  • Christopher Newport started to break away in the second half as it tallied a pair of goals within the first five minutes of the third quarter. Ashley Nau kicked away several shots from the Captains' forwards before a rebound went to the stick of Abenschoen who scored her second of the game with an assist to Caroline Hughlett. The final goal of the contest came off the stick of Courtney Hughlett to reach the 4-0 level.
  • Bridgewater's best chances came in the waning moments of the third quarter as the team drew four consecutive penalty corners with less than a minute to go in the quarter. Bekah Mercer and Olivia Ohleger each forced the CNU goalie, Lily Kerr, to make kick saves as the clock hit zero.
  • The Eagles again had an opportunity in the fourth quarter as a penalty corner resulted in a pair of back-to-back chances from Lexi Francis and Mercer which were each turned aside.
 MATCH STATS
  • The Eagles placed three of their four shots on target with Francis, Ohleger and Mercer all registered shots on goal.
  • Jade Buckles came through with a defensive save early in the first quarter to prevent a CNU goal in the opening minutes of the contest.
  • Nau played all 60 minutes and made eight saves in the cage, while Kerr made two saves and gave way to Ella Fallen who stopped one shot in 15 minutes.
  • CNU outshot Bridgewater 18-4 with 13 of those 18 shots going on target. Each team earned six penalty corners, as well.
