VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Bridgewater volleyball team resumed conference play tonight losing to Virginia Wesleyan 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first set saw Virginia Wesleyan jump out to an early 8-3 advantage, but the Eagles bounced back with a 3-0 run capitalizing on multiple errors from the Marlin attack. Halfway through the set, Reagan Stoop fired a kill to kickstart another run to bring the score within one, 15-14. VWU got to the 20 point mark first following a successful attack from the floor. BC clawed its way back with multiple kills from Brooklyn Williams, Rachael Meyers, and Kylie Robinson to make it 20-19. Faith DePew scored the last two points for Bridgewater, but Hannah Smith closed it out for Virginia Wesleyan, 25-23.
- The Eagles started the second set with an early lead 10-7 with a kill coming from DePew. BC got to a 12-8 lead, but the Marlins mounted a run of six to steal the lead 14-12. Bridgewater attempted a comeback with Stoop having three kills, but VWU was not bothered and took the set 25-22 and a 2-0 set lead.
- In the night's final set Virginia Wesleyan scored the first five of six points to take an early 5-1 advantage. The Eagles fought back with multiple attacks from the floor to comeback within one 7-6. BC took the lead for the first time of the set following a DePew kill to make it 12-11. Bridgewater scored a few more points near the end of the set but long runs by the Marlins allowed the team to take the set, 25-18.
MATCH STATS
- Stoop led the Eagles in kills with 12 while DePew followed with six and swung a .267 percentage from the floor.
- Ashley Rutherford picked up 20 of BC's 29 assists while also adding one kill and four digs.
- As a team, Bridgewater picked up five blocks compared to Virginia Wesleyan's nine. Gabby Atwell assisted on three blocks to lead in the category.
- Sophia Stites and Stoop recorded double digits in digs with 13 and 12, respectively.
