Volleyball Blanks Southern Virginia

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Bridgewater College volleyball team rounded out Sept. traveling to Southern Virginia winning 3-0.

THE BASICS
Final Score: Bridgewater 3; Southern Virginia 0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-22)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles started the first set in a tight contest against Southern Virginia until Gabby Atwell fired consecutive service aces to go up 12-8. Another run of four, which ended with a Reagan Stoop kill, gave BC a wider advantage 16-9. The Knights tried to muster a comeback but was halted at 17 points. The final attack of the set came from a Rachael Meyers kill which gave Bridgewater the 1-0 set lead.
  • The second set was even at 5-5 through the first 10 points until the Eagles went on a run to go up 9-6. Southern Virginia stuck around and eventually took its first lead of the set with the help of consecutive attacks from Sydney Bassett to make it 13-11. Following the lead change, BC regained its lead 15-13 with the help of Sophia Stites and Stoop scores. Near the end of the set, the Knights tied up the score, but Bridgewater closed out the set with a 6-1 run to win 25-20.
  • Bridgewater got off to a fast start scoring eight of the first 10 points eventually taking a 13-2 advantage over Southern Virginia. The Knights started a comeback going on a 5-0 run starting with a Bassett attack. but the Eagles maintained its lead 15-7 at the set's halfway mark. Southern Virginia started another run late in the set but a huge block from Meyers and Faith DePew helped BC get to 20 points and lead 20-17. The two teams fought near the 25 point mark but attacks from Bridgewater pushed the team to a 25-22 win to take the match 3-0.
MATCH STATS
  • The Eagles picked up its eighth shutout victory through 16 games which was last done in the 2019 season.
  • Stoop led the game with 10 kills while DePew and Atwell tied with seven apiece.
  • Defensively, Madeline Walker paced BC with 13 digs, while Stites and Stoop each had nine to end the night.
  • On the net, Meyers and DePew had four total blocks, while Atwell and Stoop had one.
  • Ashley Rutherford led the way in assists with 13 and Faith Shields finished the night with 12.
  • Meyers and Atwell each swung over a .400 hitting percentage on the night. Freshman tandem Stoop and Brooklyn Williams also had impressive hitting percentages with .321 and .308, respectively.

Bridgewater will have several days off before heading to Hollins for an ODAC contest on Oct. 5 at 6:30 pm.
