Women's Basketball Takes Care of Virginia Wesleyan

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's basketball team grinded out a 59-38 win over Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bridgewater opened the game on a 5-0 run thanks to a pair of jumpers from Riley Corcoran and a free throw from Kayla Ford. The Marlins finally got on the board with 5:43 to go in the opening frame and the Eagles responded accordingly as India Dailey found Jaden Alsberry for two. An Alexis Edmonds layup extended the advantage before a pair of makes allowed the Marlins to close back in. Edmonds and My'la Green each sank a pair at the line to make it 13-4 before another pair of free throws for VWU ended the first quarter at a line of 13-6
  • Alexis Woods and Rosemary Pierson got the scoring going in the second quarter as both guards drained three-pointers on assists from Jay Garcia. The hot start fueled a 14-2 BC run where the Marlins were held without a field goal. Pierson accounted four six of the BC points in the 4:45 time span to make it 27-8 midway through the second quarter. VWU finally ended the 12-minute drought from the field with a make before Alsberry, Garcia and Autumn Gentry combined for a 5-0 Eagle run to make it 32-10 with under a minute remaining in the half. The Marlins got on the board inside the final 30 seconds to make it 32-12 at the intermission.
  • VWU got in the score column first in the third quarter before Alsberry made a pair at the charity stripe to spark an 8-0 Bridgewater run to make it 40-14 with under five minutes to go in the third quarter. The Marlins got back on the board the next trip down the floor to start a 9-2 run for bring them back to within 19. Abby Freeman sank a jumper and again the Marlins replied with a bucket for a 7-0 run to make it 44-30 heading to the fourth quarter.
  • Corcoran got the scoring started in the fourth with a jumper and then a layup in transition. VWU replied to try and stall the momentum, but again the sophomore from Chapel Hill found nylon to give the BC offense life. Virginia Wesleyan sank its first three-pointer of the night in response to Corcoran, but Bridgewater's defense led to points in the form of a 9-0 run. Pierson highlighted the scoring spree with another make from deep range to go along with a layup off of a dish from Jaiden Polston. The Marlins made a free throw within the final two minutes, but the damage had already been done.
MATCH NOTES
  • Corcoran led BC offensively with 12 points and was just a rebound short of a double-double with a season-high nine boards. Pierson added a career-high 11 points.
  • Mekayla Clarke led VWU with a game-high 13 points on 6/21 shooting.  
  • BC out-rebounded the Marlins 43-32 behind 11 boards from Freeman and Corcoran's nine.
  • Virginia Wesleyan shot 24.1% from the floor and just 10% from beyond the arc.
