Field Hockey Downs Washington & Lee at Home Friday

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College field hockey sealed the 1-0 victory over Washington & Lee at Jopson Athletic Complex Friday night; which would secure the first-time feat since 2018.

The Basics

Score: Bridgewater (BCE) 1, Washington & Lee (WLU) 0

Records: BCE (8-3-1 Overall, 1-1 Conf.), WLU (7-4 Overall, 1-2 Conf.)

How It Happened

  • The play stayed even throughout the first quarter as both sides traded shots. The Generals would get the edge in shot totals with five to two for the Eagles. BCE managed to keep WLU out of the attacking circle for most of the quarter and the score remained at zero.

  • In the second quarter, the Eagles had their offense running early. With three minutes of play, BCE fired consecutive shots on target for one to finally hit board as Emily Tyler picked up the lone goal. The Generals would carry out aggressive and rigid offense turning out a green card halfway through the quarter. WLU drew four penalty corners all in the same quarter but with nothing to show for it, as BCE stopped it in its tracks.

  • More of the same pulverizing offense from the Generals played out in the third quarter, but nothing was hitting the net with a solid backline. The Eagles dialed in a shutout quarter.

  • Then, as the fourth quarter would wind down, WLU attempted more shots and drew three more penalty corners in the last three minutes; however, the Eagles stayed tough and delivered a shutout to ring in homecoming weekend.

Game Notes

  • Bridgewater's goalkeeping played lights out with eight saves and six in the second half to Washington & Lee's three saves.

  • Sophomore Ashley Nau had a season-high in saves with six making her goalie record an even 4-2.

  • Senior Emily Tyler collected her second-straight goal in a game this season (last time in 2021).
