Eagles Hold off Shenandoah

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's basketball team held off a late charge by Shenandoah to pick up its first ODAC win of the season.

The Basics
Final Score: Bridgewater 69, Shenandoah 65
Records: Bridgewater 5-3 (1-1 ODAC), Shenandoah (3-5, 0-2 ODAC)
How It Happened
  • Bridgewater opened the game with a bucket from Jordan Cooper and did not look back as the home side jumped to a 9-0 advantage after a three-pointer by Aaron Oates. SU got on the board but five-straight points from Woody Machado put the Eagles in front 14-2 five minutes in. Shenandoah got the gap back down to 10 points, but a deep make by Steve Burgess sparked another BC scoring spree as a 10-3 run pushed the gap out to 25-8 with 9:38 to go in the half.
  • Shenandoah slowly crept back into the game as scores on consecutive trips down the floor gave the SU offense life. The Hornets closed the gap to single digits at 30-23 after a 15-5 run that was ended by a Khalil Ward three-pointer and an Oates layup pushed the lead back out to 12. SU went on another run to close the half as a 7-2 scoring spree made it 37-30 in favor of BC at the half.
  • The Eagles opened the second half with a three-pointer from Machado and a layup by Cooper to make it 42-30. Shenandoah closed back in after an 8-2 run pushed the Hornets all the way back to within two possessions at 44-38, but an Oates old-fashioned three-point play halted the scoring spree. The teams traded scores before a pair of free throws by Cooper started a 12-5 Bridgewater run to make it 59-45 after an Oates jumper with 9:11 to go.
  • A Dorian Davis score ended the BC run for a moment as a Burgess three-pointer pushed the gap back out to a 15-point edge. A pair of makes at the charity stripe by Cooper pushed the lead out to 17, but Shenandoah did not wavier. A Joshua Stephen layup in transition for the Hornets started a string of five-unanswered points before a Ward score got BC on the board. SU responded with an 8-0 and cut the gap down to 66-60 with 2:18 to play. Oates was fouled on his way to the hoop and made a pair of free throws to stretch the gap out to eight, but a jumper by SU on the next possession cut the lead down to two possessions again. Both teams traded misses and Shenandoah had the ball back in tis hands with 21 seconds to go after an offensive rebound. Davis was open off the second-chance effort and drained a three-pointer to slice the lead down to three with 19 seconds left. Cooper made the front end of two shots and SU tried to work quickly and missed a three-pointer with six seconds to go to seal the deal.
Match Notes
  • Oates led BC with a game-high 21 points as all five of BC's starters ended in double-figures. The Eagles' starters were also the only Eagles to score on the afternoon.
  • Davis led the Hornets with 15 points. Stephen also tossed in 13 for Shenandoah in the loss.
  • Bridgewater held a slight 48.0% to 41.0% edge from the field and shot 50% from beyond the arc led by three three-pointers from Machado and Burgess.
