Men's Lacrosse Downed by SUNY Oneonta

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team suffered an 18-10 loss to SUNY Oneonta at the Jopson Athletic Complex on Wednesday evening.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bridgewater struck first with a goal from Riley Stewart off an assist by Trevor McClelland early on in the game as the Eagles took a 1-0 lead less than 50 seconds into the contest. The Red Dragons countered with a goal from Daniel Macchiarella at the 13:23 mark to knot things at 1-1. The visitors scored two more goals, one from Jamie O'Neil and one from Thomas Hnis, to jump ahead 3-1 with eight minutes still left in the opening frame. The Eagles got one back as McClelland scored unassisted to cut the lead to one goal, O'Neil got his second goal of the quarter to take the game to the second period with a score of 4-2 in favor of the Red Dragons.
  • Stewart started out the second quarter like he started the first with a goal inside the first minute and with a helper from Tyler Pinto as the Eagles got within one goal at 4-3. Grant Nyland tied the game at 4-4 after taking a pass from Drew Huber and finding the back of the cage.The visitors scored three straight goals to close out the first half as the Eagles trailed 7-4 at the break.
  • For the third straight quarter, Stewart opened the frame with a goal within the first minute as he completed a hat trick at the 14:39 mark of the third period to bring the Eagles within two goals. Eric Nicholson struck back with a goal for Oneonta to maintain the three-goal cushion before Huber scored after a pass from Jacob Mead to keep the Crimson & Gold in the game at 8-6. O'Neil scored his third of the contest at the 8:22 mark, which started a seven-goal scoring run that stretched into the fourth quarter as the Red Dragons assumed a 15-6 lead. Luke Wendler scored back-to-back goals with assists from Mead and Ryan Linn to get within seven, but another visitor goal from O'Neil pushed the lead back to eight. Aidan Bruehl found the back of the net off a pass from Pinto with 6:25 showing on the clock as BC made it 16-9. Oneonta scored again to go back up by eight just a minute later. Owen Cogan scored his first of the season as Wendler got an assist, but one more goal from Oneonta got to the final scoreline of 18-10. 
GAME STATS
  • Stewart scored a hat trick, while Wendler had two goals and an assist to also finish with three points.
  • Huber, Bruehl, McClelland, Nyland and Cogan all finished with a goal, as well. 
  • Pinto and Mead each finished with two assists, while Huber, McClelland and Linn all joined Wendler with one helper. 
  • Gabe Alexander won 12-of-24 faceoffs with seven ground balls, while Sean Kelly was 2-for-4 at the faceoff X and Killian Krapfl won 2-of-3. 
  • In addition to the hat trick, Stewart snagged five ground balls to go with a caused turnover, while Brennan McKeown also had five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • Mead registered four ground balls with a pair of caused turnovers in the loss. 
  • CJ McKnight grabbed three ground balls and had a caused turnover.
  • Ryan Addison and Grant Heidebrecht each had a caused turnover with Heidebrecht scooping up a ground ball. 
  • Oneonta out shot Bridgewater 43-39, while BC had a 41-39 edge in ground balls.
