Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's tennis team picked up a thrilling 5-4 victory over Randolph on Wednesday to keep its ODAC Tournament hopes alive.
Bridgewater jumped out in front with authority as the Eagles dropped just three games on the way to wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
Emma Staton and
Raea Crabill were first off with an 8-1 win at No. 3 and
Emily Wylie and
Ryan Roeber teamed up for an 8-2 victory at No. 2.
Emma Nesselrodt and
Jolexie Whetzel fell behind early at the No. 1 spot before recovering and falling late 6-8.
Randolph made quick work at the top spot to open singles action and even up the match score. Roeber was quick to give the Eagles the upper hand back at the No. 3 slot as she fought her way to a 6-4, 6-4 win to make it 3-2 in the match count. Wylie battled at the No. 2 spot before falling by the same scoreline, 4-6, 4-6, to even things back up.
Crabill made it seem simple as she worked a 6-3, 6-3 win at the No. 6 spot, but the match turned to a pair of three setters with BC in front 4-3. Whetzel dropped her opening set 4-6 before a late service break allowed her to extend the match with a 6-4 win in set two. The rookie rode the momentum to take an early 2-1 edge before five straight games went the other way to wrap it up at the No. 4 spot 4-6, 6-4, 2-6.
The match hinged on a battle at the No. 5 spot where Staton claimed the opening set 6-3, but fell behind in set two. The Riverheads product regrouped before dropping the frame 5-7 putting the outcome of the match on a third set. Staton jumped in front 4-0 and never looked back sealing the deal 6-3, 5-7, 6-0.
BC is back in action on Friday as it hosts Ferrum on Senior Day beginning at 4 p.m.
