Men's Lacrosse Wins Big on Senior Day

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team defeated Averett, 18-4, on Senior Day at Bridgewater Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Prior to the game, Gabriel Alexander, Tyler Carney, Dan Flynn, Hayden Gourley, Clay Lawrence, Trevor McClelland, Ethan Moses, Grant Nyland, Logan Railey, Colby Smith and Kevin Tiffey were honored as part of a Senior Day ceremony.
  • The scoring got started early as Drew Huber connected with Riley Stewart to put the Eagles up 1-0 at the 13:51 mark of the first. McClelland got a crossing pass from Stewart to double the lead to 2-0 at the 11:12 mark of the quarter and Aidan Bruehl scored with a helper from Huber to make it 3-0 just over five minutes into the game. The scoring streak continued as Huber and McClelland got together for a goal and then McClelland got his second of the game with an assist to Stewart as the Eagles started the game on a 5-0 scoring run across the opening 10 minutes. Averett finally got on the board at the 3:34 mark as Brayton Powers scored off a pass from Tigran Ceesay, 5-1. Luke Wendler responded with back-to-back goals with an assist from Huber on each of them before Huber scored another one in the last seconds of the period as BC led 8-1 after the first quarter.
  • Nyland got in on the scoring with a pair of goals to open the second period and got assists from Gourley and McClelland to jump ahead 10-1. Averett was able to end its scoreless drought off the stick of Dawson Hobbs who scored with 9:23 showing on the clock in the first half, but the Eagles scored twice more as Stewart scored after getting a pass from Tiffey and Smith tallied a goal with a helper from Stewart. Bridgewater led 12-2 at the break.
  • Cameron Shadduck scored to open the second half to cut into the lead, but Bridgewater rattled off three more goals as McClelland scored twice and Huber completed a hat trick to send the game to the fourth quarter in front 15-3.
  • Nyland connected with Stewart for a goal to start off the fourth quarter before Nyland scored with another assist from Stewart, 16-3. Owen Cogan scored the last two goals of the game for the Crimson and Gold, including an asssit from Chris McBroom, which was his first career collegiate point. The Cougars got one goal back with a man-up score from Hobbs as the game got to the final score of 18-4.
GAME STATS
  • Huber and McClelland each finished with four goals, while Huber had three assists and McClelland had two.
  • Nyland also had a hat trick, while Wendler and Cogan each had two goals.
  • Bruehl, Stewart and Smith all scored one time.
  • Stewart led the game with five assists which is a new career-high for a single game.
  • Gourley added two assists on his senior day, while Alexander, Smith and Tiffey all had one helper as well. McBroom had one tally in the win.
  • Alexander went 21-for-22 at the faceoff X with 21 ground balls, while Killian Krapfl had three wins in four tries as well. 
  • Brennan McKeown grabbed five ground balls to go with two caused turnovers, while Grant Heidebrecht had four ground balls and a pair of CTs as well.
  • Huber and CJ McKnight both registered three ground balls in the win, while Krapfl, Stewart, McClelland, Gourley, Smith, Nyland, Jacob Mead, Oliver Nowell-Shortt, Gavin Brown and Landon Blackshear all had two GBs.
  • McKnight, McClelland and Nowell-Shortt joined McKeown and Heidebrecht with a pair of caused turnovers in the win. 
  • Gabe Wallman played the first half and made two saves on four shots faced, while Zach Guthrie-Pimpinella played 20 minutes and allowed just one goal. Ian Cook played the final 10 minutes and stopped two shots.
  • Bridgewater out shot Averett, 70-15, and had a clear 65-32 advantage in ground balls. The Eagles were true on 16-of-20 clears and held the Cougars to just 19 clears in 37 tries. 
UP NEXT
Bridgewater is idle until next Saturday as it heads to Hampden-Sydney for a 1 pm start on April 13.
