RALEIGH, N.C. – The Bridgewater College women's volleyball team picked up a pair of wins in its first day in the Raleigh Invitational on Saturday.
Match One:
Final Score: Bridgewater 3, William Peace 0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-15)
Records: Bridgewater 3-2; William Peace 2-3
How it Happened:
- Bridgewater jumped in front to a 5-0 lead and never looked back in the opening set. The Pacers disrupted the flow before a kill from Faith DePew sparked another BC run to make it 8-1. WPU got back-to-back points for the first time in the match but a kill from Rachael Meyers set off another BC tear to blow things open at 12-3 after a kill by Reagan Stoop. William Peace got it together and traded points and runs with BC and even fended off a set point before a service error by the Pacers gave the Eagles a 25-14 win in the first set.
- The second set started the exact opposite way as the home team jumped out to a 5-0 advantage before a Meyer attack found the hardwood for the kill. The Pacers ended any hopes of a run as they broke right back. BC responded quickly as kills from Ashley Rutherford and Agnes Alford gave the Eagles a much-needed momentum swing. Bridgewater methodically closed back in and tied the set up at 10-10 after a Faith Shields kills. WPU responded and worked back out to an 18-12 edge before kills from Rutherford and Alford combined with a Stoop and Alford block swung the pendulum of momentum back in BC's favor. BC Slowly closed back in at 20-19 and even trailed at 23-21 before a kill from DePew sparked a four-point run to take the set 25-23.
- BC jumped in front at a 9-2 scoreline early in the third set capped off by an Alford block. The Pacers got back-to-back points, but it was the Eagles again surging forward as consecutive service aces from Stoop fueled a run to make it 16-5. WPU tried to close back in but continued to trail around the double-digit margin as a block by Stoop and Alford sealed the straight set victory.
Match Stats:
- Stoop led BC offensively with another double-double by a line of 12 kills and 10 digs. The sophomore also tossed in a trio of services aces and four black assists.
- Rutherford tallied 19 assists and nine digs while Alexis Currie pitched in defensively with seven digs. Alford added five block assists as well.
- Jordan Juanes led the Pacers with a double-double of her own with 10 kills and a match-best 15 digs.
- BC stepped in front by virtue of effective striking in the opening set as the squad hit at a .519 clip in the first set and a .320 mark over the whole match.
Match Two:
Final Score: Bridgewater 3, Warren Wilson 0 (25-15, 25-14, 29-27)
Records: Bridgewater 4-2, Warren Wilson 0-4
How it Happened:
- Warren Wilson stepped in front by a 7-3 advantage to start the match before kills by Rutherford and Stoop brought back back to within a pair. BC slowly creeped back in and got it back to within a point and took the lead by virtue of back-to-back kills from Brooklyn Williams put Bridgewater in front 12-10. WWC pulled back in and tied the set before a 10-point Eagle run change the tide of the entire set and set the tone for the match . Three-straight aces from DePew highlighted the run before BC eventually took the set 25-15.
- Bridgewater hopped in front to a 7-0 lead in the second frame capped off by a Brooklyn Williams kill. Warren Wilson got on the board and tried to put a run together before an attack error gave the ball back to BC. BC continued to roll, jumping out to as much as a 17-5 lead off a Julia Bellis service ace. The Owls started to put it together and closed in before back-to-back kills from Claire Griffith gave BC a second set win at 25-14.
- The Owls took a 5-1 lead to open the third set before the Eagles slowly closed back in. BC got back to within a point after an Owl attack error, but Warren Wilson pulled ahead to a 14-9 lead. Trailing by five, BC strung together five points in a row capped off by a Virginia Collins ace to knot the set. Each team traded punches down the stretch with both teams having set points before an Alford kill ended the set 29-27.
Match Stats:
- Griffith and Williams led BC with 13 and 10 kills respectively. The duo also each swung at over a .325 clip in the win.
- Collins was the only Eagle in double-figures in the digs department with 12. Lindsay Kelley led BC with 10 assists.
- KJ Helinsky led the Owls with 10 kills.
- The Eagles dominated the stat sheet including a 14-5 advantage in aces led by DePew with six.
