RALEIGH, N.C. – The Bridgewater College women's volleyball team completed a 4-0 weekend in Raleigh with a sweep of Oglethorpe and Meredith on Saturday led by
Reagan Stoops' 35 kills across the day.
Match One:
Final Score: Bridgewater 3, Oglethorpe 0 (25-21, 25-11, 25-8)
Records: Bridgewater 5-2; Oglethorpe 2-1
How it Happened:
- The two teams traded punches early until the Eagles pulled out to a 7-5 lead on a Gabby Atwell kill. Neither side could gain much separation as BC lead by as much as two throughout the opening set. Oglethorpe pulled even at 21-21 before a Stoop kill put the Eagles back in front. Faith Shields followed with a service ace to extend the lead and BC did not look back as a Stoop kill and another Shields ace secured the set at 25-21.
- The second set opened similarly until kills rom Stoop and Atwell sparked a five-point Eagle run to make it 9-3. OU closed back to within four at 13-9 before back-to-back Stoop kills sent the Eagles on a tear to jump ahead 20-9 capped off by an Agnes Alford kill. Oglethorpe finally got the service break, but another Alford kill gave BC the ball back. An ace from Lindsy Kelley and a pair of kills from Stoop gave BC set points and another Stoop kill polished off the frame at 25-11.
- BC put on a hitting clinic in the third set. The Eagles jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the frame highlighted by kills from Stoop on three-consecutive points. Oglethorpe tried to creep back into the frame, but the Eagles had an answer every time. OU trailed 17-8 after winning back-to-back points for only the second time in the set, but eight-straight points from the Eagles helped them cruise to taking the match in straight sets at 25-8.
Match Stats:
- Stoop tallied 17 kills in match one on the day and swung at a smooth .607 clip in the win.
- Faith DePew led the BC defense with 14 digs. Stoop also tossed in eight digs as well, while Meyers led the effort up front with three block assists.
- Ashlynn Stepehens led OU wit eight kills while Legacy Guider tallied seven digs.
- BC swung at over .500 in the second and third sets of the victory and set a season-high as a team with a .377 mark across the three set match.
Match Two:
Final Score: Bridgewater 3, Meredith 0 (25-21, 29-27, 25-18)
Records: Bridgewater 6-2, Meredith 4-2
How it Happened:
- Meredith was able to gain an early advantage at 10-8, but that was the largest gap facing either side until Bridgewater jumped in front 20-17 late by virtue of a block by Brooklyn Williams and Meyers. Meredith closed back to within a point and eventually drew even at 21-21 before a DePew kill turned the tide. The strike by the junior sparked a four-point run for BC where another kill of her own ended the frame at 25-21.
- The second set opened tight until a quick Meredith scoring spree gave the Avenging Angels a 10-6 edge. MU pulled out in front by a 15-8 scoreline approaching the business end of the set, before back-to-back kills from Stoop started a run for BC. Bridgewater pulled back to within a pair before Meredith got a quick break with an Emma Duncan kill, but a kill from Williams put a charge in the BC offense as the Eagles stepped in front 18-16 after a Stoop ace. Meredith was able to pull back in front and had a set point at 24-23 before the Eagles fought it off. Bridgewater finally converted on its fourth set point as a block by Meyers gave BC a 29-27 win in the frame.
- The Avenging Angels won the opening two points of the third set, but it was all BC from there on. A Claire Griffith kill sparked a six-point Eagle run to make it 8-4 and a kill from Atwell later in the set extended the advantage to 14-6. MU was on the back foot for the entirety of the set but was able to close back to within five at 23-18 late. A pair of MU attack errors ended the home side's momentum and gave the Eagles a 25-18 win in the set and the straight-set victory.
Match Stats:
- Stoop highlighted he stat sheet again in the second match on the day with 18 kills and 13 digs.
- DePew added eight kills of her own to go along with 12 digs, Madeline Walker also crossed double figures with 15 digs.
- Hannah Jo Jablonski highlighted the stat sheet for Mu with 19 digs. Duncan led the home team with 10 kills.
- The Eagles held a healthy edge in the stat department including a 5-1 tally in blocks.
