Ramey Drops Career High in Season Opener Win

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Bridgewater College men's basketball team opened their regular season with a 76-70 road win over William Peace Saturday evening.

The Basics

Score: Bridgewater 76, William Peace 70

Records: Bridgewater (1-0), William Peace (0-1)

How It Happened

  • Bridgewater took the opening tip and missed their first two shot opportunities. William Peace got on the board first with a midrange jumper from Sully Caruso. Bridgewater soon responded with a layup from Mason Ramey off an assist from Moustapha Diop.

  • After a trip to the charity stripe for both teams, the game entered a scoring drought that lasted a little over a minute. It was broken by a 3-pointer from WPU's Elijah Green.

  • In the following minutes, the Pacers extended their lead by as much as six. A couple quick baskets in the paint, one being a dunk from Javon Jenkins, put the Eagles back within two. Ramey drained a layup with ten minutes remaining to tie the game at 18 apiece. Ramey scored in the paint again to put the Eagles up 20-18, their first lead since 7-6 at the 17:21 stamp.

  • Baskets from both sides led to three lead changes. In the final seven minutes of the half, Bridgewater went on a 14-9 scoring run, leading by as many as nine, to go into halftime with a 43-36 lead. Ramey, Kyren Smith, Jenkins, and Diop each contributed to the scoring efforts in the run.

  • Led by Green, the Pacers went on a 13-0 scoring run to cut the deficit to three. Green scored nine points in this run, shooting a 3-3 from the field, and draining a couple of free throws. Ramey broke Bridgewater's three-minute scoring drought with a layup. William Peace scored five unanswered points in the next two minutes of play to tie the score to 62.

  • After getting fouled with 6:31 left in the game, Jahmir Brown drained both free throws to give Bridgewater a two-point lead. WPU responded with a jumper from Green. Diop drained a triple to make the score 67-64, but Green drilled another midrange jumper to cut the deficit to one.

  • With 3:18 left, Ramey picked up his fourth personal foul and sent WPU's Shawn Jones to the line. Jones missed the first free throw, but made the second to tie the game at 67 apiece. Brown made a layup, assisted by Ramey, to give the Eagles the lead. With 2:43 remaining, Diop stole the ball from William Peace. Brown was fouled on his layup attempt but managed to convert the and-1. Brown sunk the free throw to give the Eagles a 72-67 lead.

  • With a little over a minute to go, Diop reached double-digit scoring on a layup, increasing the BC lead to seven.

  • With 33 seconds remaining, WPU's Ryan Lominack knocked down a 3-pointer to cut the BC lead down to four. Brown was intentionally fouled on the inbound, granting him a trip to the charity stripe. Brown made both free throws to seal the game.
