Baseball Notches 11th Straight Win; Downs No. 19 Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Bridgewater College baseball continued its hot streak, defeating No. 19 nationally ranked Pomona-Pitzer by a final score of 12-4 for the 11th straight win of the season Sunday in California. 

The Bridgewater College Eagles have extended their record to their best program start ever in BC history standing at 11-0. The No. 19 Pomona-Pitzer Hens dropped to 10-5 overall on the season.  

How It Happened 

  • In familiar fashion to the young season, the Eagles posted runs on the scoreboard in a hurry. BC left nothing behind against a nationally ranked opponent as three home runs highlighted the course of dominant action. To get the scoring started, Ashton Smith struck first, rocketing a shot deep over the wall for the opening one-run score. Bryce Suters mashed a triple in the outfield gap and was later sent home by an RBI single by Chandler Valbak. The Eagles led after two innings with a 2-0 advantage. 

  • BC quickly piled on more runs with a fiery offense in the third inning and tallied four runs. Jakson Walter opened the strong offensive output barreling a single to left field. Smith took his base with a walk and the opportunity to break away further from Pomona-Pitzer occurred as Bryce Suters launched a deep ball over the fence for a three-run shot. Jake Harris followed suit and sent out a deep ball to extend the controlled lead at 6-0. 

  • Pomona ignited a sudden but short offensive rally with a pair of runs in the fourth inning by taking advantage of a fielding error. BC was not fazed and poured on four additional runs to make the commanding lead stand at 10-2 after the fifth inning. Valbak scored in Smith on a walk, Nick Stavros singled to bring home Suters, and Bransen Hensley finished the frame off with a sac fly to score Valbak. 

  • In the seventh inning, the Eagles pounced again, breaking out to a dominating 10-run game. Zack Chadwell slapped a single to clear the bases with Valbak and Stavros adding two runs to the comfortable lead. Strong pitching from the start silenced the Pomona-Pitzer batters as Evan Bert left the relief pitchers room to take command of each at-bat. The Hens showed a late fight in the bottom of the seventh to avoid a run rule, notching an RBI single and a run off a fielder's choice.  

  • Gary Tompkins came in to close the ninth and retired three straight batters. The Eagles held strong and took the win by a final score of 12-4.  

Game Notes 

  • Bryce Suters sent out his second home run in three games along with a top performance of three runs scored, three hits, and three RBIs. 

  • The bullpen limited the Hens to just four total hits while BC had its way offensively with 13 hits. 

  • Evan Bert earned his second win of the season with a confident line of five innings pitched on three hits, one earned run, three walks, and four strikeouts.

The Eagles return to action for one last game in California tomorrow, March 2 to face Whittier at 5 p.m. ET.
