Baseball Remains Unbeaten with Win Over Whittier

LOS ANGELES – Bridgewater College baseball bested Whittier for the 12th straight win to start the season by a final score of 12-7 Monday.

The Eagles finished their trip to California with a perfect 3-0 record along with their program best start of 12-0. Whittier (WC) has dropped to 3-11 on the season.

How It Happened

  • Although a slower start for the Eagles in this matchup, BC turned the offense around by the fourth inning to then set the tone for the rest of the game. Whittier began with the lead off a two-run home run in the third inning.

  • In the fourth inning, BC responded and pieced together four runs. Jakson Walter got the offense started with a double to left center to score Trent Holland. Bryce Suters stepped up and lined a double to open territory in center field bringing home Walter. Chandler Valbak smacked a third-straight double knocking in Suters. To close the inning, Nick Stavros had the hot bat and began his fiery outing with an RBI single to put the Eagles up 4-2.

  • WC managed to take advantage of an infield error to tack another run on the board for a one-run deficit. BC added space to their lead shortly after as Trent Holland sent out a deep ball over the left field wall. The Eagles collected three more runs in the fifth inning followed by an RBI single by TJ Johnson. Then, Valbak laced two more RBIs on the day with a bases clearing single, scoring in Johnson and Suters for an 8-3 advantage.

  • BC slipped in the fifth inning as WC closed the gap with an RBI single. The Eagles confidently recovered with another run in the sixth inning with the help of an RBI from Ashton Smith. WC gained an offensive run through the next two innings to continue to stay within reach. The Poets cut the deficit to just two runs as the ninth inning came to the forefront.

  • Nick Stavros ignited the spark to break away from the Poets with a three-run shot over right field in the ninth. Gary Tompkins showed an effective appearance, shutting out WC and closing the game with a 12-7 win.

Game Notes

  • Nick Stavros registered his first home run of the season and led the Eagles offensively with four RBIs along with two hits and one run scored.

  • The Eagles doubled the Poets in the hitting category with 18 hits.
