Women's Lacrosse Picks up First ODAC Win of the Season

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team opened ODAC play with an 18-8 win over Guilford Saturday evening. 

The Basics 

Score: Bridgewater 18, Guilford 8 

Records: Bridgewater (4-3, 1-0 ODAC), Guilford (3-4, 0-2 ODAC) 

How it Happened 

  • Bridgewater found the back of the net within the first 30 seconds of the contest. Paige Mayers scored on an assist from Alli Kuhar. Guilford got on the board at the 2:38 mark to even the score at one apiece. Maisen Jenkins stopped the next two Guilford shot attempts to reach 200 career saves. Mayers scored again with 9:20 remaining in the opening stanza, this time with an assist from Kyla Fricks. Guilford responded within a minute with a free position goal. Alli Kuhar connected with Paige Overeem with 6:31 left on the clock to take a 3-2 lead. Guilford responded a couple minutes later. For the final 4:15 of the opening period, neither team found the back of the net, leaving the score at 3-3 at the end of the first quarter. 

  • BC opened the second period with a 4-0 run in the opening five mintues of the second quarter. Overeem sparked the run with a goal 26 seconds into the period, Andrea Lorca scored twice, and Ella Price added a goal to the BC tally. Despite being a woman down, Guilford broke their scoring drought with nine minutes remaining to cut the BC lead to three. Fricks caused a turnover and scored a goal on the same play to put the Eagles up 8-4. Guilford responded shortly after to put themselves down three. Mayers scored her third goal of the contest on a free position with 4:39 left on the clock to put the Eagles up by four. Ella Price scored unassisted with 3:35 left in the half to send the Eagles into the halftime break with a 10-5 advantage. 

  • Both teams were off to a slow start on the offensive end to start the second half, as there was only one shot attempt in the first three minutes between both squads. Ella Price broke the silence by scoring two goals in a minute to extend the BC lead to seven. Guilford scored their only goal of the half with 8:30 remaining in the period. Madelaine Godat found the back of the net on an assist from Kuhar with 7:30 left on the clock. Both teams attempted plenty of shots over the remainder of the third quarter, but neither was able to score. 

  • Coach Hughes subbed Jenkins for Addison McDaniel to start the fourth quarter. Alli Kuhar scored the first goal of her collegiate career with 1:20 elapsed in the final period to put the Eagles up eight. Guilford cut their deficit back down to seven with a free position goal with 9:45 left on the clock. Lorca and Fricks found the back of the net to put Bridgewater up nine. Guilford scored their last goal of the contest with 2:40 left on the clock. Bridgewater picked up a goal apiece from Godat and Overeem to put them up double-digits to end the contest. 

Game Notes 

  • Bridgewater has won the last eight contests between themselves and the Quakers. Bridgewater improves to 9-11 in the series. 

  • BC outshot Guilford 44-18. 

  • Maisen Jenkins recorded her 200th career save. Jenkins was credited with the win and tallied four saves. 

  • Alli Kuhar scored the first goal of her collegiate career. Kuhar finished with four points, coming from three assists and one goal. 

  • Paige Overeem and Ella Price registered five points apiece. Overeem scored three goals and two assists. Price recorded four goals and one assist.

Bridgewater starts a four-game road trip with a matchup against Juniata on Wednesday, Mar. 18 at 5 p.m.
