Women's Lacrosse Flies Past Marlins, Advances to ODAC Quarterfinals

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team advanced to the second round of the ODAC tournament following a 10-4 win over the no. 7 seeded Virginia Wesleyan Saturday evening. 

The Basics 

Score: Bridgewater 10, Virginia Wesleyan 4 

Records: Bridgewater (10-8, 4-4 ODAC), Virginia Wesleyan (9-8, 4-4 ODAC) 

How it Happened 

  • Bridgewater walked away with a 2-0 lead in a quiet first quarter. Lauren Garrett got on the board in the first quarter on an assist from Andrea Lorca to put the Eagles in the drivers seat. Carly Gardill scored her first goal of the afternoon with 3:37 left in the opening stanza to put the Eagles up 2-0 heading into the first break.  

  •  Bridgewater extended their lead in the first five minutes of the second quarter on goals from Paige Mayers and Madelaine Godat. Virginia Wesleyan got on the board with 7:04 remaining in the first half. Gardill scored her second goal of the afternoon with 3:19 remaining on an assist from Godat. VWU ended the half with a goal, sending the Eagles into the halftime break with a 5-2 lead. 

  • Virginia Wesleyan found the back of the net in the opening minutes of the second half to cut their deficit to two. Bridgewater then went on a 3-0 run over the remainder of the third quarter. Gardill followed the VWU goal with a goal of her own with 10:18 remaining in the quarter. Paige Overeem added a tally to the BC total four minutes later. Mayers scored on a free position towards the end of the quarter to send BC into the final quarter with an 8-3 advantage. 

  • Lorca and Overeem scored in the early stages of the final period. The Marlins scored in the waning minutes to to make the score 10-4. 

Game Notes 

  • Carly Gardill led the Eagles in scoring with three goals and an assist for four points. 

  • Bridgewater extended their win streak over Virginia Wesleyan to four. 

  • Maisen Jenkins saved 15 shots in 60 minutes of action for the Eagles. 

What's Next? 

Bridgewater faces No. 3 seeded Roanoke in the second round of the ODAC tournament on Tuesday, Apr. 28. The game will be streamed live on FloCollege.
