HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Bridgewater College men's golf team exploded at their home tournament to turn in the best score at the Kinder-Williams Invitational in program history of 563 shooting 13 strokes under par and coming away victorious for the second-straight season in addition to senior Jayden Hendricks producing the lowest score of the tournament Tuesday afternoon.
"I am incredibly proud of the guys," said golf head coach Nick Schlickenrieder. "They did what had to be done, and they did it in absolutely electric fashion. To make seven birdies as a team over the final four holes and come out on top is something special."
As a team, the Eagles had three players finish in the top 10 among 91 golfers. After the first day, Bridgewater put together a four-under-par and was competing with Christopher Newport all day in the second round.
BC rolled ahead of the Captains with the help of an astounding 279 (-13), the lowest score all-time at the Kinder-Williams Invitational.
The senior from Germantown, Tenn., had a stellar two-day performance at Lakeview Golf Course. Hendricks stood firmly in first place for his second career tournament win and posted a four-under-par day in the second round. He totaled a two-day score of 137 (-7) which ties his fellow teammate, Walker Gillespie, for the lowest score ever at Kinder Williams.
Reigning tournament champion Gillespie was not too far behind as he squared away a fourth-place finish. Gillespie recovered effectively despite the double bogey on No. 13 and fired six birdies. The senior finished with a two-under-par after two days.
The next finisher for the Eagles was Will Layton. Layton became the third finisher in the top 10 closing the tournament with a 70 (-1). He saw three birdies marked on the scorecard.
Cai Clark began the tournament on a hot start with a 70 (-1) and a tie for seventh, however was set back in the second round as he carded a 76 (+4).
Jackson Baugher was the drop scorer and finished in 30th.
The Eagles will return to the links again on Oct. 5-6 in Akron, Ohio for the Blue Streak Invitational hosted by John Carroll.
