LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Bridgewater College men's golf team opened the fall slate at the Transylvania Fall Invitational, resulting in a 14th-place finish Sunday.
"It was good starting the season playing some of the best teams in the nation," said golf head coach Nick Schlickenrieder. "We now know where we stand against them. This was great preparation and showed us our strengths and what we need to work on. Knowing these things, the guys will be ready for [Kinder-Williams Invitational]."
The Eagles placed above LaGrange, Rose-Hulman and Central (IA) in the team score. After the first complete round on Saturday, Bridgewater (BC) totaled 294 (+6) on the day. Then, on the final day, BC collected 296 (+8) to take 14th among 17 premier schools. Individually, Jayden Hendricks closed the first scored round with an eagle on hole No. 5 and added two birdies to his scorecard for a 3-under-par (69). In the final round, Hendricks remained the top scorer for the Eagles, closing with even par.
Following Hendricks in the scorecard was Cai Clark. He closed the tournament with a +3. Although a double bogey on No. 13, Clark emerged with six birdies including picking up a two on a par 3 hole at No. 12. Clark took 31st place.
Walker Gillespie carded a +6 on the course. Gillespie struggled with landing a birdie in the final round but still worked out of deeper trouble to hold a top 50 finish.
Next on the team scorecard Will Layton rounded out the tournament with a finish of 69th with a +12. Layton earned two birdies in his final round.
Christian Carroll had the drop score with a +9 in the final round to close the tournament for the Eagles.
The Eagles will return to the links next week to host the Kinder-Williams Invitational at Lakeview Golf Course in Harrisonburg, Va., for a two-day event on Sept. 14-15.
