The Bridgewater College volleyball team defeated cross-town
rival Eastern Mennonite in three straight on Wednesday evening.
In the first game, the Eagles trailed 0-4 before rallying and
taking the lead. It was a back and forth game with neither
team able to put the other away. Bridgewater prevailed with a
26-24 victory.
In the second set, the Eagles led by as many as seven before the
Royals closed the gap and tied the score at 21-21. Sophomore
Katie Baker and junior Candice Guy each had kills to put the Eagles
up two, 23-21. Bridgewater won 25-21 on another Guy kill.
The Eagles found themselves down 0-2 before back-to-back Ashley
Scott kills tied the score at 2-2. The teams traded points
and were tied at 6-6 before Guy delivered another kill to put B.C.
up 7-6. The teams continued to trade points before senior
Erika Dirnagl put the Eagles ahead at 18-16 on back-to-back
attacks. Freshman Casey O'Leary had two service aces and Baker an
attack to put the Eagles up 21-16. The Royals rallied to push
the score to 24-19 but could not get any closer as Bridgewater took
the third set, 25-20.
Senior Erika Dirnagl had 14 kills on the night while teammate
Tricia Davis dished out 31 assists. Senior Mandy Hill had
eight kills with no errors in the game. Baker and Guy also
had eight kills while freshmen libero Abby Platt had 12 digs on the
evening.
The Eagles close out the regular season this weekend at the
Seahawk Invitational at St. Mary's College.
