Box Score CARLISLE, Pa. - After trailing 1-0 at halftime,
the Bridgewater Eagles tallied a pair of goals in the second half
including the game-winner from junior Leah Cossentino to pick up a
2-1 victory over Dickinson College in today's season opener.
Dickinson got on top of the Eagles early with a goal just 6:30
into the contest from the stick of Lizzie Borst to give the home
squad a 1-0 lead.
BC's defense battened down the hatches for the remainder of the
half as sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Waddell booted away six other
scoring attempts to keep the Eagles close at a 1-0 deficit as the
teams headed to the break.
After 20 minutes of scoreless play in the second half, senior
Christina Pybus took a pass from junior Kalah Hess and put it by
Dickinson goalkeeper Amanda West to knot the game at one apiece.
Less than five minutes later, Cossentino took a pass from junior
Brianna Jacques and beat the Dickinson goalie again to give BC a
2-1 advantage.
Waddell would turn away Dickinson nine times in the second half
as she pitched the second half shutout to help lead the Eagles to a
2-1 road victory in the 2009 season opener.
Bridgewater tallied five shots on the day, including a mere
three shots on goal, but capitalized on their opportunities to
record the victory.
Dickinson peppered Waddell all day long but the sophomore proved
to be up to the task, only allowing one goal while racking up 16
saves.
"At the start of the game, we looked a little nervous, but by
the end of the half we had settled down. Our defense
came up big for us all day and the attackers made their shots
count," said head coach Allyson Kenyon.
Bridgewater is back in action tomorrow in the home opener
against Hood College. The game with the Blazers is slated for a
4:30 p.m. start at Mapp Field.
