Box Score ASHLAND, Va. - After watching its 17 point
halftime lead evaporate, Bridgewater (10-6, 7-5 ODAC) used 19
second-half points from junior Jordan Burkholder and efficient
foul-shooting down the stretch to defeat the Randolph-Macon (13-4,
11-2 ODAC) Yellow Jackets 68-57.
Bridgewater got the scoring started early with a Burkholder
three in the first possession of the game and never trailed in the
opening frame as a solid defense mixed with a hot-shooting offense
allowed the Eagles to gain a 35-18 halftime lead.
BC ended the first half on a 16-6 run to take the 17 point
advantage into the locker room.
Burkholder led all scorers in the first half with nine points.
Randolph-Macon would make an early second half run at the Eagles,
chipping BC's lead down to a 47-45 advantage with 11:32 to play as
turnover woes plagued Bridgewater over the first nine minutes of
the second stanza.
After the Yellow Jackets were able to bring the game to within
two, a Burkholder layup brought the BC lead back to four, before a
Maggie Roy trey brought the game to a slim 49-48 lead for the
Eagles.
Bridgewater was able to extend its lead back to four points as
Burkholder continued her offensive onslaught with back-to-back
jumpers, before the Randolph-Macon tied the game at 51 off of a Roy
three pointer with just under eight minutes to play.
Randolph-Macon took the lead for the first time with 5:52 to play
off of a Molly Ariail layup, before the Eagles took the lead back
off of back-to-back layups from Emileigh Lambert and
Burkholder.
The Yellow Jacket's brought the game to within three with 2:06 to
play, but it was Bridgewater netting the game's final eight points
to win for the first time at Randolph-Macon since 2004.
Burkholder led all scorers with a season-best 28 points. The
junior went 11-of-19 from the field and 5-of-7 from the stripe
before fouling out with 84 ticks remaining.
On the glass, freshman Jackie Buckley led the Eagles with seven
rebounds.
Randolph-Macon was led by a 20 point effort from Roy. Ariail also
chipped in 19 points to go aloing with a game-high 14 rebounds to
record the double-double.
BC outshot Randolph-Macon by a 50%-to-37% clip, while the Eagles
were outrebounded by a slim 39-to-37 margin.
Bridgewater is back in action on Tuesday, February 2, when the
team hosts cross-town rival Eastern Mennonite. Tip-off at Nininger
Hall is slated for 7:00 p.m.
