Box Score 2 In volleyball action the Bridgewater Eagles dropped a 3-1
decision to Guilford on Saturday but defeated Marymount University
3-1.
In the first game, the Eagles came out strong. After a Candice Guy
(Fishersville, VA/Wilson Memorial) made the score 5-4, Bridgewater
did not trail again. Junior Katie Baker
(Strasburg, VA/Strasburg) had three consecutive kills to push the
BC lead to four, 13-9. In a span of five points, Baker
had three more attacks for kills. The Eagles were able to
hold the rally from GC and capture the 25-21 win.
The teams battled back forth in game two, with neither team able
to gain control. Baker and Mara Hogan
(Bridgewater, VA/Turner Ashby) had back to back kills to give BC a
12-10 lead but the Quakers rallied to tie the score at 13.
Guy had two service aces for a 16-13 lead. After a kill by Baker
gave the Eagles a 17-13 lead, GC rallied to tie the score at
20. Ashley Scott
(South Riding, VA/Heritage) gave BC a brief lead with an attack
21-20. The teams then traded points and an attack by Baker
gave the Eagles their last lead, 24-23. GC tied the score and
went on to win 26-28.
The third and fourth game had the teams both battling. In
the third, after trailing most of the game, Scott gave the Eagles
momentum with three kills to cut the lead 17-19. GC then went on
6-1 run and won 25-18.
BC dropped the fourth game 25-22. It was another back and
forth game. The Eagles tied the score at 15-15 when Carly
Whiting (New Castle, VA/Craig Co.) had a kill. Baker and Guy
had a double block to cut the score 18-20 but the Quakers went on
to win 25-22.
The Eagles were lead by Guy with 17 digs. Baker had 17
kills, while Kallam dished out 44 assists.
In the second match on the afternoon BC defeated the
Saints of Marymount 3-1.
In the first game, BC jumped out to an early 10-4 lead after a
Cadie
Castle kill (Mineral, VA/Louisa Co) and never trailed the
Saints. MU cut the lead to five, 13-18 and after trading
points, BC went ahead seven with a Baker kill to make it
21-14. Castle finished the game on an attack for a final
25-16.
The Saints jumped out to an early 7-3 lead but BC rallied behind
attacks from Scott and Baker. Scotts attack off a Lindsay
Kallam (Virginia Beach, VA/Princess Anne) assist tied the score at
12. The teams traded points and BC took the lead for good
when Bethany
Doman (Strasburg, VA/Strasburg) had a kill, giving BC a 16-15
lead. Hogan's serve for an ace gave the Eagles a 25-20
win.
The third game saw both teams battle back and forth with neither
team able to take a commanding lead. BC started pulling away
after Castle had another kill to give the Eagles a 18-13
lead. The Saints rallied and were able to tie the score at
19-19. BC lead at 24-23 but MU battled and came away with a
26-24 win.
The Eagles jumped on the Saints in the fourth game and led 16-10
after Scott and Castle blocked a Saints attack. Castle then
had back-to-back kills to give the Eagles a 23-12 lead. BC
went on to win 25-15.
Kallam lead the Eagles in assists with 47 and Guy had 21
digs. Baker turned in another solid performance with 16
kills, while Scott had 13. Cadie Castle had a
career high 11 kills.
The Eagles are now 13-12 overall 2-5 in the ODAC. They
resume action next Wednesday when they travel to Lynchburg.
In the other match on the afternoon Guilford was able to defeat
Marymount in three - 25-22, 25-15, 25-17.
