Box Score FROSTBURG, Md. – Senior forward Brianna Jacques
(Orange, Va./Orange) notched a pair of second half goals to
catapult the Bridgewater Eagles (8-2) field hockey team to a 3-2
non-conference victory on the road at Frostburg State.
The win pushes the Bridgewater winning streak to four games.
Frostburg State (2-11) struck first, when a Chelsea Smith shot
found the back of the cage at the 9:19 mark to put the Bobcats
ahead 1-0.
Five minutes later, the Eagles knotted the game up when senior
Kristen Combs
(Schuyler, Va./Monticello) took a Joan
Burleson (Newport News, Va./Menchville) pass and beat the
Bobcats keeper to tie the score at one.
Both teams had opportunities across the final 20 minutes of the
opening frame, but neither team could capitalize as the game stayed
at 1-1 at the intermission.
The game remained tied until the 52nd minute when
Jacques put a diving shot past the Bobcats netminder to put the
Eagles ahead by a 2-1 tally.
Jacques tallied her second goal of the game just over ten
minutes later to give the Eagles an insurance goal and a 3-1
advantage. Fellow senior Kirsten Ganslow
(Wells, Maine/Wells) notched the assist on the Jacques goal.
Frostburg State netted a late goal to bridge the gap to a 3-2
score, but it would be too little, too late as the Eagles prevailed
by a 3-2 tally.
With her two-goal game, Jacques moves into fourth place on the
career points list with 84. Her 84 points is the highest points
total for a Bridgewater player in the last decade.
Bridgewater outshot Frostburg State by a 12-10 margin. The
Eagles also owned a 7-to-5 advantage in corners.
In the cage, junior Taylor Waddell
(Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) earned her record-tying eighth win
of the season, turning away six Bobcats scoring attempts in the
process. Waddell's eight wins ties the single-season record, set by
Frankie Waldron in 2004.
Brianne Russell led the Bobcats with a goal on six shots.
Frostburg State goalie Maggie Edwards picked up the loss.
Edwards recorded six saves.
Bridgewater is back in action on Wednesday, October 6 when its
travels across town to take on the Eastern Mennonite Royals. Action
from EMU is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start.
