Box Score BALTIMORE – Freshman Shannan Thorne posted a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double in her first career game to lead three players in double figures as the Bridgewater Eagles women's basketball team erased a five point halftime deficit to pick up a 54-51 victory over Averett at the Johns Hopkins Tournament.
Bridgewater took the lead at the onset of the game off of a Thorne layup, but the Cougars quickly gained the lead and held on to it at a 14-13 margin with 11 minutes to play in the opening half.
Junior Jessica Mullen scored on a layup on the break to give the Eagles the lead back before knocking down a jumper with 9:17 to play to take a 17-14 advantage.
Averett owned the remainder of the first half though as the Cougars used a 13-5 run over the final nine and change of the opening stanza to take a 27-22 lead into the locker room.
Thorne led the Eagles in the first half with seven points as the team struggled to a 28% shooting performance in the first 20 minutes.
The two teams remained neck and neck through the first 10 minutes of the second half before a Holly Morgan jumper with 10:42 to play opened an 8-0 Bridgewater run to give the Eagles a 42-37 lead with 8:26 left in the game.
Bridgewater converted just three shots over the final eight-and-a-half minutes, but knocked down a number of key free throws down the stretch to pull out a 54-51 victory over the Cougars in the season opener.
Thorne and senior Jenny Logan paced the way with 13 points a piece, while Mullen chipped in a dozen points for the Eagles in the win.
After struggling from the field in the first half, the Eagles shot at a 44.4% (12-of-27) clip in the second half to outshoot the Cougars on the afternoon by a 35%-to-31% margin.
Thorne's 11 rebounds paced the way for the Eagles as they were out-rebounded by a slim 43-to-42 gap
Cougars guard Mette Scheiman paced the way for Averett with a team-high 20 points.
Bridgewater is back in action tomorrow when it takes on the host Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins in the championship game of the Johns Hopkins Tournament. Action is set for 3:00 p.m.
