BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Freshman Kelsey Taylor netted a game-high 15 points, while fellow freshman Shannan Thorne knocked in an 11-point, 20-rebound double-double as the Bridgewater Eagles women's basketball team upended visiting Randolph College by a 63-49 score on Saturday afternoon in Nininger Hall.
Bridgewater (3-3, 2-2 ODAC) led for the entire game against the visiting WildCats.
The Eagles opened the game on a 6-0 run over the game's first two minutes before the WildCats answered in a hurry to bring things to a one-possession game.
Following a three-point play from Randolph (2-4, 0-3 ODAC) guard Olivia Johnson, which brought the game to a 6-5 Eagles advantage, Bridgewater ripped off four quick points off of a pair of Taylor jumpers to extend the lead to five at a 10-5 margin early.
Randolph responded with another five-point burst to knot the game up at 10 each, before Bridgewater used a 10-2 run to build the lead up to eight at a 20-12 margin midway through the opening set.
Bridgewater outscored the WildCats 14-13 over the final eight minutes of the first half to take a 34-25 advantage into the locker room.
Out of the intermission, the Eagles used a 13-3 run over the first five-and-a-half minutes of the second half to push their lead to a game-high 19 points at a 47-28 margin when a Katelynn Hottinger jumper found the bottom of the net.
But Randolph wouldn't go away. The WildCats responded with a six-point run to bring the game back to a 13-point gap at a 47-34 margin with 11:50 to play off of a Brianna Lowry trey.
After the quick Randolph run, the Eagles used a six-point run of their own, which was capped off by a jumper from freshman Kelly Hughes, to push the lead back to 19 with 9:14 to play.
Over the remainder of the game, the WildCats slowly chipped the Bridgewater lead down, inching to within a dozen in the waning moments but it was Bridgewater eventually prevailing by a 63-49 margin.
Taylor was solid in the post going 6-of-8 from the field and a perfect 3-of-3 from the charity stripe to post a game-high 15 points. Thorne was also outstanding, setting a single-game rebounding record with her 20-rebound effort. The Cross Junction, Va. native also tossed in 11 points as the Eagles outscored the visiting WildCats by a 44-24 margin in the paint.
Bridgewater controlled the glass on the afternoon by a 56-to-38 gap which included 22 offensive boards.
The Eagles shot at a 37% clip on the afternoon, outshooting the WildCats, who shot at a 31% margin.
Lowry's 13 points paced the WildCats on the offensive end, while Bonnie Bishop chipped in 10 points in the loss.
Bridgewater is back in action on Tuesday night when Southern Virginia comes to town. Action is set for a 7:00 p.m. tip off. Fans are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy to Tuesday night's game to receive free admission to the Eagles' showdown with the Knights.
