Box Score 2 BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Despite a flat first half, the Bridgewater Eagles women's basketball team took a lead into the half, but a scrappy Guilford team clawed back before a Gabby Oglesby layup with 30 ticks remaining put the Quakers ahead for good and ended Bridgewater's season with a 67-66 defeat.
The loss for the Eagles was the second straight time the Eagles fell in the ODAC opening round.
After starting the game on a flat foot, Bridgewater found itself at a 19-13 deficit with 10:46 to play in the opening half.
Bridgewater responded with a 6-0 run to knot the game up for the fourth time in the half at a 19-19 tally with 7:27 to play in the first stanza.
The two teams traded scores for the next three minutes before Bridgewater broke a 26-26 dead heat with a 5-0 run to take a 31-26 lead with under a minute to play.
Guilford netted the final bucket of the first half, but it was Bridgewater taking a 31-29 lead into the locker room.
Out of the break, the two teams traded scores with the game being knotted up for the ninth time on the evening at a 37-37 tally with 16:28 remaining.
Bridgewater looked to finally get things going on the offensive end as a Jessica Mullen trey opened an 8-0 Eagles run to put Bridgewater ahead 45-37 with 13 and change to play.
The Eagles extended their lead to a game-high 12 points at a 57-45 tally with 8:05 to play with a solid performance at the offensive end and a swarming defense.
Following the Eagles run, senior Jordan Burkholder went up for a layup and came down hard to the floor and was helped off the floor with 7:23 to play and the Eagles holding a 57-50 advantage.
With the ODAC Player of the Year on the sideline, Guilford made run to cut the Eagles lead to 57-55, forcing a Bridgewater timeout.
Out of the timeout, the two teams traded scores with Burkholder coming back onto the floor in between as the Eagles clinged to a 61-59 lead with under four minutes to play.
Guilford knotted the game up at 61 each off of a pair of Morgan King free throws with 2:54 left, before the Eagles regained the lead on the ensuing possession off of a pair of Mullen free throws to take the lead at 63-61 tally.
The Quakers responded with a 4-0 run to go up by a deuce with under two minutes to play.
On the ensuing possession, a cutting Jenny Logan hit a layup before being fouled where she converted a three-point play to put the Eagles ahead 66-65 in a see-saw affair.
Following a missed layup on the offensive end, Guilford went back inside where a Gabby Oglesby jumper found the bottom of the net with 31 ticks to play to put the Quakers back ahead 67-66.
Bridgewater had a shot at the end but a Bianca Booker jumper rimmed out with less than two seconds left and a scramble for the ball allowed the clock to run out and sent seventh-seeded Guilford on to the second round and ended the season for the Eagles.
On the offensive end, Burkholder led the way with a team-high 21 points as three Eagles netted double figures on the evening. Burkholder leaves Bridgewater as the all-time leading scorer with 1,765 career points.
Bridgewater dominated the rebounding battle, owning a 44-to-34 advantage over the Quakers behind a team-high eight rebounds from Burkholder. The senior also dished out five assists and swiped five Guilford passes in the loss.
Guilford was led on the offensive end by Morgan King's 22-point, 12 rebound double-double. Oglesby also tossed in 16 for the Quakers as Guilford owned a 28-to-20 advantage in the paint.
In the second half, Guilford shot at a blistering 58.3% clip to own a 44-to-32% edge in shooting.
Bridgewater ends the 2011 season with a 22-4 record.
