ROANOKE, Va. – Senior guard Jenny Logan drilled a jumper from long range with 1.4 seconds left as the Bridgewater Eagles (6-3, 4-2 ODAC) women's basketball team erased a six-point deficit with six and change to play to escape with a 61-58 victory over Hollins.
Bridgewater led from the game's outset with the Eagles maintaining a 35-26 lead in a tightly played first half.
Junior guard Jessica Mullen hit a jumper to open the second half to extend Bridgewater's lead to double digits early in the final stanza before a quick 5-0 Hollins (4-6, 3-3 ODAC) run chipped the Eagles' lead to just six points at a 37-31 margin with 18 and change to play.
Bridgewater pushed its lead back to eight points on a Kelsey Taylor jumper before going ice cold from the field for the next eight minutes, allowing Hollins to eventually take a 45-42 lead with 9:15 to go in the game. The Eagles endured a nine minute scoring drought from the field.
Junior center Katelynn Hottinger ended Bridgewater's drought from the field with a jumper with 9:01 left to cut the Hollins lead back to one.
Following a pair of free throws from both teams, which kept the Hollins lead at one, five Hollins points in 25 seconds allowed the home team to push its lead to a game-high six points at a 52-46 margin with 6:26 remaining.
Mullen responded with a big jumper to cut the lead back to four, kick starting a 10-0 Bridgewater run which gave the Eagles a 58-54 lead with two and change left to play.
Hollins tallied four unanswered points down the stretch with the front end of a Jasmine Greene free throw knotting the game back up at a 58-58 gap with 16 ticks left.
Sophomore forward Rebecca Reifsnider pulled down the defensive rebound as Greene failed to convert on her second free-throw attempt before the Eagles moved into the offensive end.
Logan picked up a screen from Reifsnider on the offensive side of the court and rolled off on the far-side wing and drained a long-range jumper with less than two seconds left to put the Eagles back up by a 61-58 tally.
Hollins called a timeout after the shot and had possession to end the game, but the in-bounds pass missed the mark handing Bridgewater a three-point victory by a 61-58 margin.
Hottinger and Logan both led the offense with 13 points each. Logan neared triple-double numbers by chipping in six assists and seven steals on the evening.
On the glass, freshman Shannan Thorne paced the Eagles with eight boards, all on the defensive end.
Hollins was led on the offensive end by a 26-point effort from Jasmine Greene. Greene was outstanding on the night, pulling down eight rebounds, while dishing out seven assists and swiping six steals in 40 minutes of action.
On the boards, Lauren Morris paced the way as Hollins outrebounded the Eagles by a 41-to-35 gap.
Bridgewater is back in action tomorrow afternoon when Washington and Lee comes to Nininger Hall. Action is set for a 3:00 p.m. tip-time.
